The entire article was full of loser bitch energy and incredible levels of misunderstanding regarding what the power imbalance between the two countries would be in any "negotiation" on deeper integration. We're already about as integrated as we can be while maintaining our sovereignty, and this little crisis is proving that.
 
Fwiw....the only way an EU styled deal would work is if every other economy in the western hemisphere joined it, and then on top of that it included the entire anglosphere. There has to be an administrative counterbalance to American power in any federation or else it's just isolated vassal states orbiting the American empire. The only reason the EU works as it does is that there are economic and administrative counterbalances to German and French power. Mostly that no one is really powerful enough to dictate shit to each other by themselves (and the EU has pretty extensive veto powers given to all member nations as well)

Put the UK (3.4T), Canada (2.2T), Brazil (2.2), Aus/NZ (2T), Mexico (1.8T), Combined rest of Central, South, & Carib (2.2T) in and give administrative measures for reigning in the US when you can get everyone else to agree on something and sure, you've got something to work with. But the Americans won't give up a single ounce of sovereignty under any circumstances, won't give authority to extra national court/arbitration bodies over them, and would expect massive concessions from everyone else. Hard fucking pass.
