OT: American Politics

It's interesting, the equal weight S&P etf is solidly green today. I had a dude that manages a $100m ETF tell me to put any new money in that instead of spy right now. There are not many professionals out there recommending the s&p 500 at this stage.

Tldr on the reasoning: the mega caps (i.e. most tech) are overvalued and need to correct

Interesting low stress trade would be fading the high beta names by shorting SPY but going long RSP (the equal weight ETF)

Steve Bannon said any move to evict Canada from the Five Eyes would be a counter-productive move that would just end up hurting America.

“Canada punches way above their weight. If you look at military history, they’ve been the best ally we’ve had,” Bannon said.

If we're looking at a realistic picture of what it would take to simply not "need" the US as an energy customer: 7-9 years and about 100 Billion dollars

- An additional TMX expansion...preferably a twinning ffs. The last expansion took 12 yrs on paper, but 8 years of that were delays and fuckery that if all public stakeholders got their shit in line, should have taken 12 months. Construction of the 600K barrel expansion took 4 years. Do a full twinning on the existing route (it possible) and we're looking at a capacity of ~ 1.8 million bpd, or about 35% of Alberta's production.

- We currently have a pipeline running to Sarnia and through from there to Montreal, but it cuts through the US midwest, so isn't really safe from US control. We need that if we're going to cut reliance on imported finished product. There's the ability to refine in Ontario, Quebec, and on the east coast if we can get pipes to them. Rail is doable while that's being done. But we're talking about billllions (~25?) and 6-10 years for completion. A handful of refinery upgrade projects to go with it and we can probably bridge the gap between our current domestic consumption and refinery capacity.
