OT: American Politics

You're slowly starting to post more and more like WeHave. I am absolutely not saying this situation isn't dangerous, likely to go sideways, really fucking terrible etc. It's bad and going to get worse for a lot of people. But some people are imagining worst case scenarios in their head and acting as if they've already happened. The game has only just begun.

We're down 1-0 but this is still the 1st inning.

Be careful not to give this man too much credit. He is still a poor man's used car salesman, buffoon, and in poor health.

1st inning?

lol

January to March out of 4 years = 1st inning, yeah.

We have seen a lot of gross actions from people who are sick in the brain. For sure. But the court has also reversed several DOGE decisions and sent people back to work in multiple departments, Trump's cabinet has already started pushing back against Musk, I am 99% sure we have the vast majority of top legal minds in the country on our side. You mention protests, it's been a bit slow to start but has absolutely been growing in momentum and will continue to do so. Take a look at Republican town halls for one example. And also every member of the Democratic Party just came to the understanding that they are going to have to fight back MUCH harder immediately, or they will be replaced by someone who will.

Which is to say, don't give him too much credit or power. Nobody knows what's going to happen.

Think this will age so so poorly.

Naive as hell.

This started in 2015, not 2025.

I'm not saying that nothing can be done. I'm saying little is being done. The protests are a small, small fraction of what will be required. The Democrats can't be trusted to do anything but roll over in their current configuration and Trump is about to Andrew Jackson the courts over the next months or so, it's easy to see it being set up now with the abduction of the Palestinian kid and now sending a few hundred venezuelan's to a gulag in another country entirely.

I’m with ME that it’s way worse than most people think but I’m with Axl that’s it’s still early. I mean the Dems are currently feckless, still licking their wounds while the average citizen is still hoping for the best from the sidelines….

But powerful protests can start at any time… just need a spark.

Media also needs a few rabble rousers that can depict the dangers… the left mouthpieces are mostly comedians right now.. they offer a coping mechanism rather than a call to action

All of the autocracy warning signs are flashing red, and nothing is being done.

Say Elias gets jailed for speaking out against Dotard. Or Vindman. Or someone like Seth Abramson. Who is going to come to their defence? Who is going to take to the streets? If it hasn’t happened yet, with all of the overt attacks on the constitution and insane bullshit like annexing fucking Canada, it probably isn’t going to.

A cult started in 2015 uniting a bunch of religious morons with a conman. A movement 90% based on conspiracy theories and bullshit. This cult is not insurmountable, I mean walking up a steep hill could take out their dear leader at any point.

As for the 2nd part, I think we're actually pretty close to agreeing here. It's been a bit slow to start and needs to grow quickly, but things are in motion. There needs to be more urgency.

And as for the Democrats, there was an argument to be made that allowing the government to shut down may have led to a worse outcome. None of us fully understand the intricacies of the U.S. Congress enough to know for sure, though enough people that I respect said no that I am on board with the No vote. But the good news is that Schumer and his crew definitely got the message that status quo is unacceptable going forward.

The economy is crashing. Unemployment and inflation are rising. Protests are only going to grow from here.

They just literally tried to disappear a Palestinian kid for speaking out about Israel, and concrentration camped a few hundred others without due process. They're idiots, but they're cruel and they're just finding their feet while there's minimal resistence to it. Just a few small pockets of Dems, lawyers like Marc Elias, a few organizing groups, etc.

and Trump has a 47% approval rating. A negative net rating because he's polarized the entire fucking country, but 47% of Americans look at this and think it's fine.

Schumer was on one side, Bernie on the other and when Schumer won the Republicans were almost celebrating in the streets. I don't think there's particle physics homework necessary to figure out the "intricacies" of this one mate.

I dunno how to connect the dots to other authoritarian figures any more than has already been done.

- courts being ignored, SCOTUS compromised
- military leaders loyalists
- congress ceding power of the purse
- convicted felon as president, threatening to invade allies, previously committed coup attempt
- hoping for protests to save us, will likely get violent as he’s already discussed a wish to simply shoot any protestors

We’re in the nightmare scenario already, we’re not imagining them up. It’s all stuff they’ve explicitly planned or talked about.

But he's 4% underwater in opinion polls.

I tend to be on the optimistic side of things (perhaps a bit of a coping mechanism there but mental health is important!) but the concerns are all valid. Humanity has persevered through worse. We got this.
