OT: American Politics

Also for anyone panicking about a dictatorship, don't even worry about it. Cuck Schumer has been "panting away" with Republicans in the gym and believes it will all work out.

The list would be:

Bennie Thompson, Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, Jamie Raskin, Stephanie Murphy, Elaine Luria, Pete Aguilar, Adam Schiff, and Zoe Lofgren

Definitely not surprising.
If he tries to “undo” presidential pardons, and somehow succeeds, some of his own pardons would be subject to review as well.

You're slowly starting to post more and more like WeHave. I am absolutely not saying this situation isn't dangerous, likely to go sideways, really fucking terrible etc. It's bad and going to get worse for a lot of people. But some people are imagining worst case scenarios in their head and acting as if they've already happened. The game has only just begun.

We're down 1-0 but this is still the 1st inning.

Be careful not to give this man too much credit. He is still a poor man's used car salesman, buffoon, and in poor health.

I ask this so that I can get some of what you have - what is the source of your optimism?

January to March out of 4 years = 1st inning, yeah.

We have seen a lot of gross actions from people who are sick in the brain. For sure. But the court has also reversed several DOGE decisions and sent people back to work in multiple departments, Trump's cabinet has already started pushing back against Musk, I am 99% sure we have the vast majority of top legal minds in the country on our side. You mention protests, it's been a bit slow to start but has absolutely been growing in momentum and will continue to do so. Take a look at Republican town halls for one example. And also every member of the Democratic Party just came to the understanding that they are going to have to fight back MUCH harder immediately, or they will be replaced by someone who will.

Which is to say, don't give him too much credit or power. Nobody knows what's going to happen.
this didn't start in January...

Think this will age so so poorly.

Naive as hell.
again, the lesson that many of us accused of "Trump derangement syndrome" have learned, time and again, is that our worst fears were typically a best case scenario.

really hope the trend does not continue, but I am not optimistic.

I mean, he's already deporting people without due process, detaining foreigners for no reason, and trying to revoke green cards cause he dislikes your views.

I’m with ME that it’s way worse than most people think but I’m with Axl that’s it’s still early. I mean the Dems are currently feckless, still licking their wounds while the average citizen is still hoping for the best from the sidelines….

But powerful protests can start at any time… just need a spark.

Media also needs a few rabble rousers that can depict the dangers… the left mouthpieces are mostly comedians right now.. they offer a coping mechanism rather than a call to action
the longer the Dems and co. wait to start taking actual meaningful action, the more and more dotard and co. will have consolidated their power. there's a window of opportunity now, and it's largely being squandered

I dunno how to connect the dots to other authoritarian figures any more than has already been done.

- courts being ignored, SCOTUS compromised
- military leaders loyalists
- congress ceding power of the purse
- convicted felon as president, threatening to invade allies, previously committed coup attempt
- hoping for protests to save us, will likely get violent as he’s already discussed a wish to simply shoot any protestors

We’re in the nightmare scenario already, we’re not imagining them up. It’s all stuff they’ve explicitly planned or talked about.
yah they're doing the project 2025 things. they made a plan, told us all about it.

then when folks pointed it out, they played dumb, the media was complicit.

and now here we are, they're enacting the project 2025 playbook.

and yet still, we have so much cognitive dissonance. it's bewildering

no you guys are acting like Don Jr. is out there tossing a hood over Seth Abramson's head and throwing him in the back of a van. And I'm saying while that may happen, it certainly hasn't happened yet.

Isn't it fair to say that Donald Trump's ego cares more about his approval ratings than he does about ideology? I think he cares way more about that stuff than any other politician. And they care about it quite a lot.
so, because they are only doing some of the unimaginably cruel, illegal, and terrifying things they promised us, but not all of the ones they could, we should relax? is this the argument?

Again, you guys are misunderstanding what I'm saying. I am pretty sure this will lead to a Constitutional crisis eventually. But that is not happening tomorrow.

And if you think this won't also lead to mass protests and a vicious legal fight, you're wrong.
the crisis has come and gone. they largely missed the boat at the time. now we're into the authoritarian years.

I honestly don't know what levers people think are still left here.

They can't charge anyone with criminal contempt here for ignoring the court orders because the President has pardon power. Civil contempt is supposed to be coercive to get compliance with the order not punitive, but they just... continued to ship them out to El Salvador with no due process while mocking the decision on X. It's already done?

You don't really want a situation where protest is the only lever left. That's dark and we're already there?

I don't say this lightly but pretty sure we're either at the point, or soon will be, where violence is the only lever left. which is a scary thought in and of itself

Yeah, I would agree unfortunately. You're kind of cooked when any one branch is blatantly pissing on the other two branches.

I'm not sure if people actually think they're going to take it this far and with no consequences, just... stop?

You don’t understand how fascism works, my sweet summer child.

Simply put, by the time you recognize it for what it is, it's already too late to do anything about it.

Hitler was a failed, frustrated, would-be artist just a few years before he became dictator for life. And he didn't have the internet and AI at his disposal.
