OT: American Politics

Would be hard but not impossible to pull it off if just Mexico & Canada went it alone. The current plan of using 16 stadiums is kind of unnecessary. Qatar used 8 and 6 of the 8 had capacities of ~45K. Do BMO, BC Place, and Olympic Stadium in Canada. Mexico has a bag of grass stadiums big enough.

It wouldn't be the most architecturally relevant world cup in history, but no one would end up in an El Salvadorian prison due to a clerical error either.
You would likely need to keep it out of Montreal due to stadiums. The Big O would collapse in a world cup environment.

One of the Alberta cities could likely take games. BMO field has been in renovation mode since end of last season , likely not enough time to do much at any additional stadium.

The Big O's structural issues are mostly to do with the roof when there's lots of snow on it. That won't be an issue for the WC.

As for Alberta, Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton would be fine and has a larger capacity than BC Place. McMahon Stadium in Calgary is an outmoded, nearly 70 year old dump.

Both Regina and Winnipeg have modern stadiums in excess of 40K seats but not sure if they have the other infrastructure, like hotel rooms, to handle an event of this magnitude. Then, of course, there's Tim Horton's Field in Hamilton, which is way bigger than BMO and has space to have more seats added if necessary. Ottawa too, has a suitable venue, although it's slated for a major renovation that might conflict with the WC schedule.

But yes, Canada has a handful of stadiums which are fit for purpose.

I thought both were part of the 2026 plans already? BMO with additional temp seating and the Big O had some work done already.
