OT: American Politics

so yeah...

a) i find it a bit annoying in general that there's a foreign policy anti-palestine litmus test for NYC mayor;
this is simply not true.

globalize the intifada is a call for worldwide violence against Jews. it may not have always been intended to be, but that is the practical reality. I'd like to see candidates for political office condemn explicit calls for violence against ethnic groups.

many of the folks who use that phrase are quite explicit about the meaning they ascribe to it - worldwide violence against Jews, Jewish institutions, and Jewish life.
b) i don't blame him for trying to focus the issue on the rights of palestinians, neither personally or politically.
that's all well and good, but there are many much less offensive ways to do so than what he did
BUT, i would like to see the quote about the warsaw uprising.
maybe I'll track it down tomorrow, I do have to do SOME work!

many would say it's a call to end the israeli occupation of palestine.

and then we're back to Jews being the only minority/ethnic group in the world whose lived experiences are ignored when it comes to determining harmful expression against them.

I get what some people using the phrase intend. they may think it's a harmless phrase, or in support of Palestinian freedom. but that's not how language works. it is not entirely subjective.

and objectively, many of the people calling to globalize the intifada quite literally mean worldwide violence against Jews. and we see the results in the Boulder and DC attacks.

so for Mamdani to either be ignorant of all this, or not care, is something that really bothers me. and I think it would bother you too if masses of people were calling for violence against a minority group you were a member of (that is subjected to massively disproportionate amounts of hate crimes)

and, of course, this is without even getting into what the second intifada looked like. (spoiler - lots of indiscriminate violence and attacks against Jews).
