My bigger concern is that in all of the reading on authoritarianism that I've done, 30-33% public support is considered the minimum necessary for the regime to continue holding power. I'm pretty sure that if push came to shove, the support for a single party Trump led system would be about 40%. He has just about everything in place to declare elections illegitimate and take over. I'm not sure there are any reliable guard rails left.

Yeah, that’s where I’m at too. I think the people investing their hopes in the midterms are delusional. It’s too late for elections to fix this problem, IMO.

Trump, the ghouls around him and the American oligarchs who’ve thrown in their lot with him do not believe in democracy, do not believe in universal suffrage, and if there is even another free and fair election in America again, they are not going to hand back their power and face a potential reckoning just because a bunch of inconsequential plebs said so at the ballot box.

The history of humanity has been one long struggle for brief moments of democracy and the rule of law.


You can’t give up at the first serious challenge to the current democratic moment.
 
I'm hopeful that they're not competent enough to pull it off. They obviously want to, and the democrat party establishment doesn't seem to be willing or competent enough to actively combat them. I'm hoping for a weird fluke in the judicial system when this all goes to court.

I wish I was more than just a bystander to this madness, I would be involved. It's tough watching your neighbours house burn down while watching the cinders of their fire plink off of our roof and not having any direct action we can do.

it's a worldwide thing tho. best we can do is make every attempt to keep the truth alive. propaganda can work, but usually not forever.

there will always be an undemocratic element, whether they're witting (i.e. rich) or unwitting (memeslop eaters). It's just we're in a moment where they've perfected a certain brand of propaganda that's worked on just enough voters so far. And yeah, the corruption of the democracy played a big part in that. But even in this moment, they're still a distinct minority that's just learned how to game the system just enough.

but the wave can turn, even when it's lost - look at Hungary. hell, look at nazi germany.
