This seems to be pretty common among populist authoritarian strongmen, for at least recent history and probably longer.

Just go and watch some videos of Benito Mussolini. The guy comes off like a fat, bald, dumpy totally cartoonish oaf.

Or Hitler. A dumb, twitchy, drug-addled little mental midget with a massive persecution complex, a fetish for ridiculous uniforms and the stupidest-looking moustache and haircut combo in history.

I’m sure their rise to power was just as incomprehensible and ridiculous to sane Italians & Germans back then as Trump’s cult of personality is to us now.

If Trump was handsome, strong, fit, articulate or intelligent, he would be threatening to most of his supporters. He’s the perfect combination of profoundly, obviously flawed and 10-karat gold plated pseudo machismo. If someone who looks and acts like that can be a big, important, rich, powerful dude, so can I.

And then of course he is also the most openly racist, bigoted, misogynistic person on the political stage in decades. It’s a perfect storm. Also part of why no serious threats have emerged since he lost the last election. There are pretenders, but they all need him.
