OT: American Politics

I think it's mostly that his fans can't think clearly. This used to happen with Stern fans back when he's a bit more relevant. These guys talk for 4+ hours per day so the fanbase becomes cultish and obsessive in a hurry. You spend 4 hours a day with someone and it can happen to anyone. It's a perfect storm for dangerous misinformation spewing that has obviously cost thousands of lives. So I'm not saying I BLAME anyone here. I get it. It's just an unfortunate set of circumstances at the end of the day.

So interviewing someone with a contrarian viewpoint once, is roughly equal to or worse than assaulting women? Interesting comparables.
Eh. It sure doesn’t sound from the clips I’ve seen that he’s just “interviewing people with contrarian viewpoints”, he’s pretty actively influencing people they don’t need a vaccine. Not sure why you’re downplaying that part. People will likely get really sick following his lead on that.

I don't disagree with this, really. Everything about covid sucks. I wish we were all like Bari Weiss and could declare ourselves "over" covid and go back to normal right away!

“Free speech” is about protecting people’s right to speak in the public square without being threatened, persecuted, tortured, deported, forcibly separated from family, incarcerated and murdered by their own government.

What Rogan is facing is a boycott in the market place.

Exactly. And everybody has the right to walk away from the speaker in the public square if they think they're a dick. Spotify just happens to charge a subscription for their piece of the square. Boohoo.

Freedom of Speech *
your anger about the Rogan/Neil Young/spotify situation suggests that you do not appreciate what this actually is.

spotify is a private company, not government.

and no one is saying Rogan is not allowed to record and broadcast a podcast where he is a dumbass. they are saying they don't want to subscribe to a company that allows him to broadcast covid misinformation. seems reasonable - it is their choice as consumers.

Yup. Spotify isn’t even part of the public square. It’s a private company, and its priority is return to shareholder equity. That’s it.

It cannot and should not be expected to uphold freedom speech which is a matter of constitutional law.

I like all the uproar. Like presto said, it’s fun. The digital world makes it easy to boycott shit.

Personally, I’ve always avoided Rogan but I like Spotify and will most likely renew when my free year is up

I don't know if you're referring to me, but I wouldn't take a bullet for anybody. As I said yesterday, I haven't listened to his podcast much at all lately. You are also greatly over-stating his influence. It sucks that he got taken in by the nonsense, but he's one of millions.

Neil Young is wrong here, you just can't see it because he's on the right team.
I know, how dare Neil Young exercise any control over his intellectual property. The nerve of this guy.

"Other people are antivaxxers too so WHY DON'T YOU LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!!!!"

Has to be the worst argument from the Rogan gang. I once got pulled over by a cop for speeding and when he came to speak to him I pointed out all the cars speeding by us and said "LOOK AT THEM!! THEY'RE GOING FAST TOO!" Fucking Presto. Needless to say that didn't work. I was still given the ticket because I drove over the speed limit.

While we're on the topic philosophically...

Freedom of speech is not absolute either legally or morally. There is and should be guard rails on speech. Where those guard rails belong is a conversation for society at large to partake in and arrive at as is seen fit.

If platforming and amplifying the views of dangerous pseudoscientists pushing dangerous, provably false public health information isn't the modern equivalent of "yelling 'fire' in a crowded theatre", I'm not quite sure what is. So let's not approach this subject as if Rogan is immediately well within his rights to platform and amplify dangerous pseudoscience.

So even if we were accepting that this was an attack on his freedom of speech (it's not), and that some combination of the people cancelling spotify, Neil Young & Spotify assumed the role and authority of the government (they don't have it..), we would be left with the question of whether or not this was a legal limitation of speech. I struggle with seeing where it wouldn't be. US law already doesn't allow bullshit health claims on unregulated products/treatments and many charlatans have been convicted of making untrue medical claims. I struggle to see where this is protected speech, even if all of the stretches above were granted.

It’s like I tell people I occasionally see shopping at the store.

WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU CENSORING AMAZON?

It's a fan thing. We know they'd have a different take if they weren't Rogan fans. Their argument is hilarious.

But I get it. We're all homers for things we like. Hell, zeke has predicted leafs cups in 50 of the last 30 years.
