OT: American Politics

becoming really hard to see a path out of this tbh.

Train wreck in slow motion down there. Didn't hit the brakes nearly soon or hard enough, a done deal imo short of something pretty crazy happening. It just didn't get taken seriously as a possibility. Now we're seeing articles written about how Trump is going to steal the 2024 election when there is copious amounts of proof that he did highly illegal shit in trying to steal the 2020 election. When your system is so rotted that it takes long enough to combat attempted election theft that the same guy is still walking free to try to steal the next one, you're done.

the 'system held'? (more like the system took many serious body blows and is now equivalent to Azovstal...)

I suspected all the post modern theorists I read in undergrad were goofy when they said that truth won’t really matter in a hyper mediated future as much as personal narratives and memes…. and here we are

There's no commonly shared reality anymore. There's nothing more terrifying than that imo, and nothing that makes free society more untenable.

Self-government is not possible unless the citizens are educated sufficiently to enable them to exercise oversight

Jefferson was a smart fellow.

The media is a huge issue in how they frame things imo. Even outlets perceived as left leaning do this weird thing where they try to seem balanced by presenting both sides equally even if one side is behaving undemocratically.

... and I just realized I'm arguing a similar thing in both a hockey and politics thread simultaneously re: game management.

Failure is progressive until it's not. The more we learn about Jan 6th, the more we realize that it was nearly the catastrophic failure that years of progressive failure was guiding towards. We're all just waiting for the next Jan 6th now imo.

RE Jefferson Quote
Yeah… but even educated folks have succumbed to peddling tribal fantasies. Guys like Cruz and Hawley are not dumb; they lack shame, honor and basic decency

An argument I've made for years regarding "left leaning" media is this. If you want me to believe that any media outlet is actually left leaning (when the chips are down and not just window dressing for revenues sake), show me left leaning ownership. Very rarely will any corporate entity cut it's own throat in pursuit of journalistic truth.

I don't think the founders envisioned an America where people of what they would deem to be such low moral character (that yeah, slave owners looking down their nose at your morals isn't quite the judgement this should be) would be holding power.

Pretty much no one envisioned it (except a bunch of philosophers) — most of us assumed the Age of Enlightenment would just keep going and going until it hit every last irrational soul among us

I understood why there wasn't a lot of activity re: January 6 right away, gotta take the time to build an ironclad case with this much polarization in America.

But - it's been 15 months now and still zero response from the DOJ.

Still we must remain optimistic, truth and facts still exist and things can change fast these days. There was a time when many people thought covid was a hoax, until most knew someone who was sick or dying. And many on the right thought the naysayers were full of shit about Putin - that took 1 day to completely unravel.

Overall I am hopeful; it’s too easy to succumb to recency bias (whatever is occurring now will just keep happening) but I suspect we haven’t hit bottom yet…
