OT: American Politics

It was not a stupid comment. Spending fed. money on PBS is waste. Whether (much more) money is also being wasted on oil companies in the form of subsidies is a valid question so maybe Obama should raise it.

Waste? How so?

Do you think that society sees no benefit from PBS?

I guess it is all in how you define waste.

Sure, PBS has some quality programming and is not very expensive in the grand scheme of things. That being said, if parents absolutely need PBS to raise their kids then they're not doing what they should be doing. Furthermore, PBS takes donations so if you really want it around, pay for it.

I for one wouldn't cry if it stays or goes. Indifferent would be the word.

I do every year, and, btw, most of its funding comes from those "evil" large corporations. How ironic.

Maybe PBS isn't a necessity to raising a living being, but isn't it nice to have something that encourages kids to explore the natural sciences? I mean if your parents are scientifically illiterate, it's not likely you are going to find much encouragement around the dinner table.

I'm taking it too far? Look how far the Dems, Press and Comedians have taken his one stupid example.

Now you're taking it too far to the extreme. Nobody is claiming that PBS is needed as a babysitter.

I love how I make one post and three different people take three different things out of it. The beauty of diversity... down with White Power.

Well, then you must think that the fed. govt should greatly increase what it gives to PBS. Most Americans disagree.

It is hard to make an argument that Americans suffer from science illiteracy given the huge innovations that come out of the US, but the abhorrent state of media seems to suggest that American's really don't know uplifting, and inspiring content from mindless drivel. I think a strong fight should be made to continue funding, at the very least to keep it at current levels.

Americans suffer from illiteracy period. At a rate that is an embarrassment to the western world. Where was PBS and their letters to curb this?

Can't believe you guys are dissing CBC with quality like Corner Gas, Little Mosque on the Prairie and no hockey on saturday.

Doesn't CBC carry Sesame Street?

Where would they be without it?......one of the most important battles being fought right now is the battle for mindless entertainment vs enriching ones intellect, and stations like PBS are one of the few still fighting the good fight.

For the pittance it costs, it's an embarrassing statement on society in general that people actually think this is a portion of the budget worth quibbling over.....
