OT: American Politics

I actually can't wait until this presidency is over. I really want to see what the rightwing media machine talks about once they no longer have Obama around. There's no way that Hilary can be nearly as rich a target, and god forbid a guy like Christie wins.....what the hell will Fox & Rush talk about for 4 years?

They'll talk about the lefty conspiracy of setting up such a steep uphill climb for Christie to take on, of course... lol

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Any fire could take their lives, and they have ten times the training teachers do, so at least those wages are somewhat justified.
I don't disagree - but the numbers don't support that they are dying with any sort of regularity.

Fire prevention and new techniques and technologies make firefighting a hell of alot safer than in years past. $100k a year, plus pension, plus benefits isn't reasonable. Not to mention that as the article mentions 500 applicants for 20 spots means supply is more than enough to meet demand without shelling out a mint every year.

Think he was talking about the police being fire bombed.

Friend of mine took a pay cut from being a secretary to become a firefighter. I assume after a few years it gets bumped pretty high.

Well paid secretary...

The numbers are posted for all to see. Fire fighters, like many public servants, get paid too much.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

$41,540 - 1st year
raises every year to $69,234 in year 5
then in 8 $70,618
11 $74,080
18 $74,772

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Cops aren't armed with live rounds in those situations. They get smoke cannisters, rubber bullets, or beanbags. You wouldn't fire those at a violent crowd?

I would fire those, but there's a reason that they don't get actual guns. Because shooting them would be dumb. Unless by 'shoot' you meant 'shoot with non-lethal weapons' which seems unlikely.

True enough. Technology is saving their lives to be sure. But they're still at more risk than a teacher.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Irish has been highly critical of Hudak. What he's saying is that this dissent has been brewing for some time.
I didn't read anything into his comment, just asking for an honest opinion from a PC insider.

I have no interest whatsoever in voting for either the Liberals or the NDP in the upcoming election, so I'm really hoping that the PC's actually can give me a palatable alternative. Otherwise, I'll have to throw my vote away on some independant candidate.

Absolutely.

Ontario - and all governments - simply need to get out of the business of guaranteed pensions.

Give people some additional money via a self-directed RRSP and move on. That way you have an exact amount of your annual liability and aren't playing the ponzi scheme game.

And it needs to happen today.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

What side are you on? Do you honestly think Tim Hudak is the guy to lead the PC's back into government?

I know who's leading the revolt. And I can't stand them. (if you actually think this is 10 people in London, you're wrong)

I understand the grievances they're trying to express and most of their grievances aren't wrong.

I also disagree with the tactics being used to quell the dissent.

So, as yet, I haven't taken a side.

Bengazi, embassies closed, Obamacare, military spending, Afghanistan, Iraq, WMD, Syria, Arab spring, climate change, Oil, Food stamps, immigration, teh gayz, border security, Israel / Palestine, Russia...

They'll make do.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Any job that carries the risk of not coming home ever again deserves to be well paid.

Plus, if you start lowering the salaries of the essential services staff, they will go elsewhere, and you will end up with a lesser skilled force.

You get what you pay for.

That's more for cops than firefighters. I know a guy that works so little that he does roofing on the side and makes a whack of cash for basically sleeping at the firehouse.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

But in practice, is that the best way to prevent an escalation of the situation, or to reduce your odds of being killed?

Plus, How often do cops actually die, or even get seriously injured when they're in full riot gear getting those hurled at them?

Not always in full riot gear. Motorcycle cops have also been firebombed.

The difference here is that they have enough experience to know that are not made of marshmallows and minor injuries heal. I'll bet everything I have that if the exact same situation happened in Greece, the cops would enter the train, pepper spray him......and beat the crap out of him. In the end....and this is all that counts, there are no body bags.

BTW....cops in Greece are selected on ability, not political correctness, race or sensitivities.

Back to the cop who shot the perp. I was willing to to forgive the over-reaction of the first three shots, the second 6 with 6 seconds to see that there absolutely no danger to him, that ANYONE with a brain stem can see that there is no danger to anyone, then that crosses so far over the line that he should never hold a badge or any gun again. If there is yahoo behavior in his past, then he should be charged.
