OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

One of the best, most violent beatdowns I have ever seen on the twitters on mbow's boy, Dingaling. Worth looking at the thread in its entirety:

Unfortunately thus far the pattern appears to be that the more transmissible a variant is, the higher viral load results from those infected and the more deadly it is. I'd love of this one randomly went the other direction tho.

Because of covids incubation period, the general rule that a virus gets less deadly doesn't really apply. It can infect a host, the host can then transmit it for the next 2-3 days pre-symptomatically and then kill the host and the virus will continue to thrive. So it's completely random and so far higher transmissibility has led to higher severity. But yeah, that doesn't have to continue. A lot of it may come down to luck too. Hopefully this one is a baby back bitch.
isnt the viral load less during the pre symptom days?

I still cannot believe Dr. buttmask recovered from his buttmasking idea to retain any credibility. the rest is gravy for me.

Dr. Buttmask. Man.

I like this guys theory a lot. I hope it's correct because that would IMO be best case scenario since we already know that this thing will evade the fuck out of immunity from infection and vaccines; it's the one thing we can say with pretty fucking good certainty. If it's at least less intrinsically transmissible than Delta than this is easily manageable IMO.

Bimbo Presto thought: So you can detect covid in peoples shit and wastewater surveillance has been a useful tool for many regions around the world. Nerds should invent something that we can put in our toilets that detect when we have covid. That way when we take a shit, a light goes off and bam, we know we're covid positive and the chain of transmission is immediately blocked.

One of the stupidest things I've ever thought and I'm sorry for anyone that read it. Carry on with your days.

If he's right, how much protection vaccines provide from severe infection is going to be a massive variable that determines how bad this is. Remember that Delta was way more transmissable, and way more severe than previous variants. If...if he's right and Megatron is "only" as transmissable as previous variants, and less severe, it may not out compete daddy Delta....and if the vaccine provides good protection from severe and long symptoms, this may just be a concerning ripple to deal with in what will remain a largely Delta era in the covid fight.

TLDR: I think my money is still on Delta. Wishful thinking maybe, but there are arguments in the early data for both.

Yeah and I think there's good priors to suggest that 3 doses may provide decent protection on Omicron (or 2 doses + prior infection) so if the theory is correct we will probably be alright. Seems like just 2 doses or just prior infection may give us almost no protection so a "new" virus rifling through a completely immunonaive population sorta makes some sense and would make sense if it takes over in a lot of countries.. It's basically back to square one for a lot of people when covid first came to scene in 2020 (with hopefully some protection from severe disease, as you mention). So it may not necessarily NEED a transmissibility advantage to outcompete for now to become dominant. And then when we get that population immunity to Omicron or variant-specific boosters, that may tip the scales back to a more transmissible Delta becoming dominant again.

Might be wishful thinking though. If a lot of this spread is transmissibility based it's very bad. Can't stress that enough. Immune escape is fixable.

Covid symptoms linked to the new omicron variant have been described as "extremely mild" by the South African doctor who first raised the alarm over the new strain.

Dr. Angelique Coetzee, chair of the South African Medical Association, told the BBC on Sunday that she started to see patients around Nov.18 presenting with "unusual symptoms" that differed slightly from those associated with the delta variant, which is the most virulent strain of the virus to date and globally dominant.

"It actually started with a male patient who's around the age of 33 ... and he said to me that he's just [been] extremely tired for the past few days and he's got these body aches and pains with a bit of a headache," she told the BBC.

The patient didn't have a sore throat, she said, but more of a "scratchy throat" but no cough or loss of taste or smell — symptoms that have been associated with previous strains of the coronavirus

Other patients she has tested displayed similar symptoms

I have on good authority that omicron is a HOAX. Fake news.

No doubt.

But cellular-enabled toilets that measure cocaine and tequila consumption are real, and they send in readings to the New World Order Police.

Users are identified by the latest in AI recognition technology that, most emphatically, is not scanning faces.

People said that about Alpha and even Delta when they first came on the scene because they infect younger folks first. It's way too early to tell one way or another since it's all just anecdata, though hospitalizations increasing means it hasn't become a cold or anything. I'd take a little less severe tho.

Alpha through delta were not just flus. 5.2 million fatalities.

The Spanish Flu faded away after 4 years, but not before killing millions. Could be the same with COVID.
