OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

Alberta is planning to hit people not following isolation rules hard. (though they will never follow through on the larger fines)

On March 25, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health issued orders under the Public Health Act to legally require returning international travellers, close contact of confirmed cases, and people exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms to self-isolate.

Law enforcement agencies have been granted full authority to enforce public health orders and issue fines:

  • Through amendments to the Public Health Act, community peace officers and police will be able to issue tickets to enforce COVID-19 public health orders.
  • Fines administered through tickets for violating an order have increased from up to $100 per day to a prescribed fine of $1,000 per occurrence.
  • Courts will also have increased powers to administer fines of up to $100,000 for a first offence and up to $500,000 for a subsequent offence for more serious violations.
  • These new fines will be in force over the coming days.
Also provided a snitch line for those who know of people not cooperating

If you know someone who is not self-isolating when they are legally required to:

  • take proper precautions and distance yourself from the person to limit your risk of exposure if they have symptoms
  • remind the person that not following public health orders is against the law and puts people at risk
  • submit a complaint online

Wait a minute, Hillary had her after election party at Javitz Center. I don't think Trump supporters will go there.

Even after our gov't released the "don't travel anywhere in the world" advisory, I had idiot coworkers say the advisory was "vague" and said they'd go anyway. People are painfully, painfully stupid.

And now they expect the government to arrange flights back for them. I say you left on your own when told not to so find a way back on your own.

It says March 7th was the start of it.

So maybe just fine the cruise ship.

I feel that maybe on March 7th it was not as big of a deal? Maybe I am wrong though.
March 12 the NBA/NHL cancelled. March 13 I think Ontario closed schools. March 13, also PM told Canadians to come home asap.

I think the NBA suspended on March 11 or 12, a whole lot of people weren't taking it seriously before that point. So probably not fair to just abandon them out there eventually resorting to Lord of the Flies and cannibalism.

K just fine the cruise ships. Scum of the earth. I feel like I've been home for a couple weeks and it was pretty obvious it was getting serious by the start of March and it wasn't wise to get on a confined space with thousands of people.

All cruise ships and air travel should of been suspended in early March for new travelers who had to board

If you were already travelling or scheduled to arrive by then its one thing but they went too far to keep this going

Millions could of been stopped to ease the spread of the virus

I get the argument that that this situation didn't become "real" for people until fairly recently, even though we probably should have known better. I'm guilty of it myself. I was in Italy towards the end of February (though Italy had no reported cases the day I left Canada), and was still waffling about whether to go ahead with another vacation at the end of this month for a short time after I got back from my Italy trip.

That said...I still don't think I'm able to give a pass to anyone who hopped on a cruise ship within the last month or so. Not after the whole fiasco with the "Diamond Princess" cruise ship became front page news.

One person on that ship tested positive on February 1st, and within four days, 250+ other passengers were infected, and the ship ended up stranded in quarantine off the Japanese coast while the infection tore through the rest of the ship.

If you willingly got on any cruise ship in the world after watching how that situation unfolded, it's on you to pay your own way home.
