OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

The hysteria is coming from the media. Not the doctors. It's almost as though they are demanding the government do more here and questioning the wisdom of opening schools.

Our PC government is quite progressive in their recognition that marginalized and racialized kids have heat, safety and food at school.

For many in this province which has a higher than average per capita child poverty rate, school is the only warm safe place where they get fed.

And the so called hard hitting reporters are claiming that this is putting people's lives behind the interests of business and calling on the province for more restrictive measures.

And they're doing this at a time when we have less people on ventilators and in critical situations then we did at previous peaks. Yeah the media here are behaving an irresponsible and hysterical fashion trying to sow more fear. Fear catches clicks.
Opposite is true tbh. Most of the media is saying the pandemic is almost over. Most experts find these predictions laughable because they never age well (these predictions have taken place at least 16 times throughout). You can disagree with the consensus opinions of the experts and say they don't matter all you want! I'm good with that. But the fact of the matter is the reality of the situation has been far more dire than the media has portrayed for the majority of this pandemic. And quite frankly I don't say that often about the media!

I'm talking about a very specific media here. The Halifax media. They don't think it's over. They are acting as though it is March of 2020.

our chief medical officer of health's most recent comments were along the lines of 'our hospitals are beyond 100% capacity'

Oh Halifax has a more cautious approach, even if I lean more in that direction. Np, fair enough!

Yes. Do you listen to the the questions being asked of the government though? Do you hear the tone of the voices of the people asking? They sound panicked while our chief medical officer sounds resigned.

I rarely listen to the press conferences anymore

FEAR MONGERING BITCH!!!
Again it's not our chief medical examiner that I'm worried about it's not the fact that I'm worried about it's the series of panicked questions calling on our Premier to go back and do things like recreating Atlantic bubble or follow and contact Trace every case. The calls around schools especially. And the notion that our kids are in schools in order to support businesses when the approach and the language from the premier is that our kids are in schools because schools are places they are safe.

I think that's part of my problem is I still listen to them and a lot of the questioning is out of line with what is actually happening. It's like staring at a car wreck and I can't take My eyes off it. I think much of the media is under playing it but the specific local media in Halifax are hysterical ninnies.

At the end of the day the situation sucks and we all need a scapegoat. For some it's the media, for others it's the scientists and for the rest it's the governments. But the situation simply sucks balls, which is the root of the problem at the end of the day. There are no easy decisions when you have a deadly virus widely circulating when you don't really know how dramatic its long-term effects will be even from a mild illness.

I couldn't agree more. I think the Nova Scotia government including the conservatives who are actually progressive and the liberals who are actually conservatives both did a really good job. And I think our government and our chief medical officer and the scientists are continuing to do a good job here and I trust them.

I trust the government and every time the media calls for more restrictions of my personal Liberty when our chief medical officer is saying that our restrictions are enough I get really frustrated.

When I listen to the press conferences its as though they want to go back in time to when we were all locked down and not able to see anyone that's the feel for the lines of questions and I might be misinterpreting.

Yeah and you have some people who don't like seeing people downplay or minimize the situation, which is the situation in most provinces/countries. And others don't like hearing reality (which sounds like may be the case in Halifax).

So you're not gonna satisfy everyone. You either have to lie and tell everyone that things are going great or tell the truth, which tends to get people worked up as well. At the end of the day I blame covid. The situation sucks.

It's not even the people who are reporting the reality of the situation. There are people here who are actively trying to craft a narrative that is even worse than reality.

I will after the next one because I'm sure Tim bisque will say something fucking asinine that I went to slap him for
it's funny you mention him because we are subscribers to the Halifax Examiner, and the first place I went to look after your post was their covid update from yesterday, which is entirely fact driven with no opinion/editorializing.

now, I know that Tim has strong views and I am sure they are apparent in his questions but in terms of what is actually reported on the Examiner's site as news, I cannot take any issue with.

but I hear you as the few media updates I have listened to are basically a series of questions from the media trying to get Strang/Houston/Rankin to explain why they are not doing what x reporter or y soccer mom thinks they ought to be, force them to justify the rules or decision a vs b, etc.

I mean I have some qualms but overall, definitely agree
