OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

I genuinely don't care about what really happened but man whenever stuff like this comes out, there is a lot of misinformed people spewing nonsense. It seems science is ignored and vague reports without any public evidence are trusted entirely. As nerds have said repeatedly, show many any evidence and the probabilities will shift. As of right now science says one thing is more likely than the other. That's it. It's not a big deal to accept that but it seems difficult for many to grasp.

1. Still no evidence for anything other than the incredible emidemeological evidence of natural

2. China can still be harshly blamed for this because their practices in these wet markets are deplorable and will continue to cause more pandemics in the future if nothing is changed (and it appears the western world is unwilling to do anything about this).

3. You can also always address and update biosecurity at the same time. You can do both. Either way it's China's fault. Either way, fuck China. Either way, these 2 things need to be addressed.

Have to remember, this isn't about China for the lab leakers, that's a bait and switch. It's really about #Faucibiolabslockhimup. It's about an American political movement fueled entirely by conspiracy theory clinging to anything they can to "prove" their world view is accurate.

And yes fuck China. But the dialogue around this was initially really quite obtuse and divided along left / right lines.
It was considered racist to call to end flights from China in late February 2020 which may have slowed the spread.

There was also no evidence of the virus found in any animals at the market.

Just in and around the cages.

Swab samples were taken from market surfaces like floors and cages after Huanan market was closed. Samples that tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 were linked to stalls selling live wildlife.

Red foxes, hog badgers and raccoon dogs – mammals now known to be susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 – were sold live at the Huanan market in the weeks preceding the first recorded COVID-19 cases.

A detailed map of the market illustrated that SARS-CoV-2-positive samples reported by Chinese researchers in early 2020 were associated with the western portion of the market. This is where live or freshly butchered animals were sold in late 2019.

Andersen, co-senior author of both studies and a professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research commented: “Upstream events are still obscure, but our analyses of available evidence clearly suggest that the pandemic arose from initial human infections from animals for sale at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in late November 2019.”

Some of the first virologists who were the largest proponents of "let's investigated for lab leak ASAP" did investigate further and came to the conclusion of what is highly probable vs what is highly improbable. These people quite literally sounded the alarm on this as early as Feb 2020 and wanted to investigate it ASAP. They were not silenced (posted it all over twitter) and even worked with the US government in their investigations.

They investigated the composition of the virus and immediately ruled out bioweapon, and then came the epidemiology bit which is nearly entirely ironclad and centered around the wet market. If you read their paper you will see that lab leak is not ruled out but there would need to be a series of nearly impossible events to take place for it to have happened. Which.. Is possible! Just unlikely.

And there some of us who don’t support that world view AND believe that discussing this and other aspects of the pandemic is something that should be done and not merely dismissed or shut down.
Like the science behind and evidence on masks is both poor and inconclusive. Or that any cultural or economic group are not necessarily hegemonic in their beliefs or desire.

I will read that

It wasn't dismissed. I mean, I just posted a link with a study from Kristian fucking Anderson, one of the smartest microbiologists on the planet. That's the opposite of it being dismissed. It was taken seriously and studied by our literal best and brightest on the subject.

What should be dismissed and shut down is the wild jumping to conclusions that was 100% happening at the time.

Well, this is just not fucking true regardless of how many times you repeat it.

while you're doing some reading, here is a summary of 49 peer-reviewed studies on face masks

How many were double blind?

Conclusive evidence in double blind studies sloshiest hand washing having an impact. The evidence suggests that masks are helpful but these studies are not double blind. It is disingenuous to suggest with absolute certainty that masks completely work.

To make such a statement is a call for more study. At the time we did the best with what we had
That does not eliminate the need for more study now that the pandemic is over.
And yes I know Covid exists but in an endemic state.

How many were double blind?

The fuck are you on about? How in the fuck can you perform a double blind study regarding something you wear on your fucking face? If you're trying to test the efficacy of masks, even putting a shittier quality mask on the control group would potentially alter the results. I'm entirely uneducated about these things (zero post secondary science at all) and even I know this is a stupid rebuttal.

Double blind is one method of...wait for it....randomizing and controlling a study for bias. That's the gold standard, not any one specific method of randomizing and controlling.

So if you're asking for a randomized & controlled study on masking. Here you go: https://www.livescience.com/randomized-trial-shows-surgical-masks-work-curbing-covid.html
