OT: MLB Thread

They still have Stroman, Hutch, Sanchez, Estrada who all look like starting pitching options. They definitely need to add another 2 guys to that group to get back to being at least respectable. But without those 3, the Jays still have about 40M to spend on their rotation, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a couple capable starters.

Osuna is also likely a starter long term.

Also if Price and Buehrle both leave, the Jays will pick up the option on Dickey... so all three leaving won't happen.

Further, Buehrle and Price are both big money contracts... if they both leave the Jays will still throw money at some of the available UFAs be it Smardjiza, Cueto, or whoever.

the chances of all three leaving and the Jays signing no new pitchers is zilch.

Not sure how many pitchers will want to come to toronto
1) they have to pitch in the dome
2) the team doesnt give out deals longer than 5 years
3) they have 3 veteran pitchers as free agents (MB, dickey, price)

but a decent post season run should help

# 2 might change after Beeston leaves. Jays looking for a new president.

Re: Habs sign Alex Galchenyuk to two-year, $5.6M deal

For the same reason you give the Expos and Alouettes a pass for giving you nothing.

The Als and Expos don't have a reputation to uphold the way the Habs do. They also weren't rich like the Habs are relative to the other teams in their respective leagues. If you operate on a shoestring you take the results you get. and lord knows I can get cheap football tickets and the bleacher seats at the Big O for Expos games were only a couple of bucks.

You charge top-dollar prices and jack them up every year? You'd better produce.

So because of how good the team was 30+ years ago it changes how I should enjoy watching them now?

Toronto has not shown it is a major destination for FAs for quite some time. Granted, the US money the players are paid will go farther here given our low dollar, but of course, they also pay more in tax in Toronto and according to some here, that is a major factor in determining if someone signs.

I guess come playoff time, if Toronto's team gets in, for me it will be anybody but the Blue Jays

It's about winning. It was a major destination in the WS years. If they win, it's back to a wanted place to be. Just like the majority of teams.

I never like to see Toronto teams succeed because their fans are insufferable. I moved to the west coast in large part to get away from them. Of course the "national" media ensure that escape is impossible but at least I'm physically removed from them.

But no I'm not "worried". The Jays aren't going to win it all so they're just a nuisance until they get eliminated, just like the Leafs are a pain in the ass until they get sent to the golf course for the summer.

Why is it you only appear here when a Toronto team goes on a streak?

Because the Toronto media has fired up the hype machine and he's already taken a big swig of the kool-aid. Heck even in soccer, a sport I don't follow, the lead story on the TSN website last week wasn't about the Impact signing Drogba (who I'm told is a pretty big deal from the EPL) but about some nobody who plays for TFC missing the MLS all-star game or something. Fans mobbed the airport in Montreal just to catch a glimpse of this guy getting into a limo but it was pretty much ignored by the "national" media in Toronto.

If the Expos were still around and had made those same trades and were fighting for the division lead, nobody outside of Montreal would even take notice of it. But when the Jays do it I see reports not just on Sports Centre but on the National with Peter Mansbridge. Really? For crissakes it's only the beginning of August and people are already annointing the Jays as prohibitive World Series favourites. There's two months worth of baseball yet to be played. They haven't won anything yet.

You really think it was the media and not the Jays adding Rever/Price/Tulowitzki i/Hawkins/Lowe in a 48 hour span? It got everyone in baseball in the US talking.

And we'd never know what the reaction would be for The Expos. They don't exist anymore and instead of acquiring players, they were constantly trading them.

It's odd to try to claim this is the media brainwashing people. The Jays themselves created this buzz. No one else. In fact, the #1 guy responsible is a Montrealer and former Expos employee.

I really love the "Toronto Hype Machine" for the Leafs. That Phil Kessel hot dog vendor story was just there to create so much buzz for the team. Also, the "Mike Babcock Will Never coach the Leafs" really got Leaf fans going...

WeHave seems like a very miserable man. Dude is there anything in life that makes you happy? Like anything at all?

Glad you brought up Babcock. I recall the close-up full page photo of him on the cover of the Hockey News with the caption: "Why Mike Babcock is worth $50 million". If he had signed with any other team the headline would have read "Is Mike Babcock worth $50 million?"

He hasn't coached a game there yet but already he's the greatest ever and worth $50 million simply because it's Toronto. That, my friend, is the Hogtown Hype Machine at work.

Is this not the "Montreal" forum ice page - why is their blow jays conversations going on?

The white trash capital of Canada conversations should be taking place on the Make Beliefs board....
