OT: MLB Thread

So the Jays earn a playoff spot... champagne celebration afterwards. One week later they secure the AL East Division... champagne celebration again. Not soon after that they win a playoff round... champagne celebration. Are they going to have another champagne celebration if they win the AL Championship... and then another champagne celebration if they win the WS? Is this normal in baseball these day?

Did TFC have a champagne celebration last night after clinching their 1st playoff spot in their 9 year history? Will the Leafs have a champagne celebration when they win their 1st game this year?

It has been normal for years. Unlike the other sports you mentioned, in baseball it is VERY different. It extremely difficult to even MAKE the post season. As a player, you may never see it again. As a fan, it may take another 20 years.

I know that posters from Leaf board no longer will be able to laugh derisively at CanadienFan celebrating after a series win.

You actually started mocking us years ago when the Leafs were making the Eastern Conference Finals fairly regularly from 1993-2002 and the city got excited. Then every single Canadian team's fans started copying the practice.

So which is it? Are the supposedly magnanimous Canadiens above such peasant celebrations or do you embrace it like Montreal appears to have for the last few postseason series victories?

As Habs4Life correctly pointed out, the two things are not even remotely comparable. It's actually quite a joke how the playoff format in hockey and basketball is set up so that over half of the teams in the league make the postseason.

There's nothing special about it.

Baseball has a schedule that is two times the length of any other North American game. It touches ten months of the calendar and is a marathon grind. It's extremely difficult to even earn the right to play in the post-season (hence why you saw even the wild card winners celebrate their accomplishment), let alone win a round. Winning the World Series is even more difficult.

So yeah, I think it's more than warranted. Kansas City lost in game seven of the World Series last year, returned to the ALCS with largely the same roster intact at most positions, and they still celebrated wildly yesterday after earning the right to play for the league pennant.

Iirc y'all were on the streets after every series win. I don't care what you do, just don't laugh at others. I've never celebrated in the streets rioted or anything so I'm not responsible for brethren.

Who was laughing at others?

People just found it strange that Toronto fans were mocked endlessly for years, and then your lot went and started doing the same thing, only with a lot more resulting property damage.

TFC'S playoff run will be over before anyone in Toronto even notices that they were in them to begin with. The Jays have even made people forget about how putrid the Leafs are. The only good thing about the Jays being in the post season is that we're spared from the endless Babdick hype for a couple of weeks.

Im not sure anyone in the 416 knows the Leafs' season has started.

hoping for no weekday morning/afternoon games!

me too, too many bloody bandwagoners in the office following the game and not working.

Contessa said the same thing happened at her office.

It is the same as when the Cannots made the Final in 2011. People who had never mentioned hockey in three/four years all of a sudden had to wear fan gear and leave to watch the game

Why does this bother you? People do the same thing during the Olympics. Everyone enjoys being part of a thing that is greater than themselves and celebrate. It will always be the case.

The fact I am paying their salary to work is more than sufficient reason. Unlike me who if I dog it during the day, I have to stay late or work weekends, staff just goes home at their regular time.

It was bad enough when it was the local team, but this team is based 4500km away and has no real ties to this city.

Habs fans should be above such peasant celebrations for anything short of a Cup victory and i certainly don't embrace it, but I can't stop it from happening. Millennials are always doing stupid $hit like celebrating meaningless or otherwise dubious "achievements". This is the generation where all participants got trophies so that the losers wouldn't feel bad about failing. The one's who's parents clapped every time their kid took a dump. I don't expect them to have any sense of proportion.
