OT: Movies/TV Shows

Atlanta season 4 is out and that is a damn good show.
Season three has some amazing afro futurism, black scifi that I'm really digging.

Season f has started off strong with the first two episodes.

Andor pretty great. Gritty Star Wars with smartly stolen blade runner, wall-e and other classic sci-fi aesthetics.
Exact word I used describing it. I like it a lot. More low tech grit please. Also the fact he's not cool as a cucumber all the time.

I just finished a weekend comedy fest as part of the kick off for the just for laughs Toronto.
Saw John Mulaneys first show back in Toronto after four cancellations and then his first show after rehab and his intervention.

Mulaney was a pro, and he was damn polished, but you could tell he was working through new bits. But that's cool too.

I wanted to catch a few more shows with the passes and so I reserved Jarrod Carmichael....just from the job he did on SNL.

But I just watched his HBO show called Rothanial....and oh my God. That is like nothing I've seen before. It is comedy, cathartic, deep....

I don't know if it would be for everyone here, but it should be. Especially if you'd like my respect moving forward.
Anyway...it's called Rothanial by Jerrod Carmichael.

Would love to hear your thoughts of you've seen it or will give it a watch.

Now I'm so excited to see him next Friday

Jerrod is one of my faves — saw his one man show at JFL MTL about 5-6 years ago. He doesn’t play it safe, that’s for sure.

One of his bits involved having mixed feelings about slavery — horrible, of course, but it got his ancestors out of Africa (“you know how many people would love to get out of there right now?”)

Half the audience was squirming. He caught a smile on my face (it was a tiny club as he was just launching his career) and we chatted briefly after the show

That's an amazing story.. thanks for sharing.

As mentioned, I knew of him, then saw the SNL piece (which obviously is super safe) but that Rothaniel show hit different.
(no I'm not gay) (not that there is anything wrong with that)

But even the conversations about the relationship with his brother and mother spoke to everyone at my house in such a personal way.

Anyone still watching the Wheel of Power?

As an adaptation of Tolkien's work it's fucking brutal. As a work of semi original fiction it's boring as fuck. Amazon seems to only be capable of adapting established fantasy IP if they use the first season to create weird unnecessary tension about who the big unveil is. Is Halbrand Sauron? Dunno, could be, tune in next week? Gil Galad? Pharazon? Could be anyone acting a bit shady, make sure you watch next week!

there's only the 1 season so far still right?

Wheel of time? Yeah. 2nd season is finished shooting. Hopefully they pull the plug after this season. The same level of quality writing and attention to established lore that went into that debacle is slowly showing itself in this one. But Amazon is so deep into this financially that we're going to get 50 hours of content whether we want it or not.

yeah we're getting multo seasons, they're all in on this.

as for WoT I'll probably watch it at some point for shits but yeah as I've mentioned I found the books overrated and pretty derivative of earlier fantasy writing thematically, if not directly in plot.
