Drives a Corvette.
I saw Danson actually comment about this in interviews. He was very uncomfortable at first portraying Sam Malone because of that. They actually changed the character from ex football player to pitcher due to his build as well. Fred Dryer had auditioned for Sam Malone. The funny thing about Danson on Cheers is the way that they portray him as the stud of all studs. I mean, I like him, but girls falling all over themselves to get at him requires suspension of belief the same way that James Bond basically runs through hails of bullets and pretty much never gets shot. You just buy into it as part of the experience, but it's comical.
Even Luke Skywalker drove a Vette:Drives a Corvette.
Agreed, the former athlete thing does make it more believable. But if Ted Danson had decided to sell insurance instead of go into television, I doubt he'd be considered a very good looking guy.

They really gotta shorten the wait between seasons on this.
You mean to just be on tv or film? Sure. To be a star? You kinda have to have the looks.tip: only the women have to be super attractive in TV/FILM. Guys just have to be decent looking and charming.
Nah, even some of the biggest heartthrobs wouldn't be all that if they weren't stars. You mean to just be on tv or film? Sure. To be a star? You kinda have to have the looks.

That's the point... If he wasn't an actor, he'd just be a good looking guy. Nothing too impressive.I think most people would think all three are of the heartthrob variety. Dempsey was literally called "McDreamy".
You're probably right about us not being the best deciders of male hotness. But yeah, that was what I was saying. You didn't have to suspend disbelief to believe that Sam Malone was a ladies' man. He's definitely a good looking enough guy to pull it off.I'm not entirely sure if this crowd is the best to discuss which male actors are the hottest.
But I do think you underrate guys like Dempsey in his prime. I mean, okay, maybe he's not quite the "I'm not gay, but if I ran into him in a bar..." category, but I think someone like him probably is closer to that than people are arguing.
I do think Sam Malone/Ted Danson yeah even in the 80s wouldn't necessarily have been considered a true heartthrob, no. Although I think for him, I kind of feel it worked fine in character, at least moreso than it being some GQ cover model who ends up tending bar. He's more of the "big fish in a small pond", which I think especially in a show that's much more of an everyday people show, worked great.
Not in "Can't Buy Me Love".I think most people would think all three are of the heartthrob variety. Dempsey was literally called "McDreamy".
