OT: Movies/TV Shows

I ****ing hate horror flicks. Aside from them usually being completely stupid, these days I honestly can't deliberately put myself on edge for two hours.

Hey Montana - have you seen the Gods and Monsters movie yet? The alternate reality thing really doesn't appeal to me and I've seen it get both terrible and great reviews. I figure if you like it I'll check it out.

I haven't yet, as I intend to go through the 3 episode prequel they made, as well as the short comic book run, prior to watching it......with Bruce Timm back at the helm as creator though, I think it's a safe bet that it's going to be pretty damn good.

Had it all downloaded for a bit now, but keep forgetting to go through it......now that you've reminded me though, I may crack into it tonight if I get the time.

A lot of talk about the Director being removed before the final action scene and constant conflict between him and basically everyone during principle filming.

I see a lot of geeks trying to blame the studio, but the Hollywood Reporter had a story months ago how strange the director was acting.

The guy directed a very, very low budget film called "Chronicle". Good movie, but that doesn't mean he was ready for a 150 million film. The guy's career is over before it started.

Studios should think twice before handing over massive films like this to so one so inexperienced.

31 yrs old as well.

I don't know if his career is over per se, but he's going to have to go back to the low budget world and churn out another "Chronicle" to prove the 1st wasn't a fluke, and nobody is going to trust him with a big budget until he's proven he can play well with others. The "insider" chatter is that he was a control freak while directing Chronicle and tried to do the same in a move with, like...real actors, and a budget and professionals working with him and shit.

With that said, I don't think Fox is a great studio to work for on comic book movies. They've managed to drop major deuces in 3 major Marvel franchises now. ****. They shredded the Dark Phoenix story line in X-men badly (which is "fine" as long as you make a good movie...they sure as **** did not), made the Wolverine flicks really meh (despite having a big name lead who plays the role well) and have ****ed FF up 3 times in a row now....they also managed to **** up Deadpool for about a decade (and only Ryan Reynolds and Co playing the social media game in a lovely way saved that...so far), and seem to be well into ****ing up Gambit.

I'm hoping they just give the FF rights back to Marvel now. It would give Marvel more flexibility as they start expanding into the sci-fi realm (they would likely get Silver Surfer and all associated characters back in the deal as well). Marvel would treat them right finally.

I think the Punisher pieces of shit and the epic deuce that was Daredevil were also Fox....

Marvel has made some less than stellar entries, but nothing truly bad. Even their worst efforts (Cap 1, Tony 3, Thor 2, Hulk) were entertaining popcorn movies.

The studio has ****ed up enough FF movies at this point to get the blame. But another bomb might make them finally sell the rights back to Marvel.

FF is kinda a shitty franchise to begin with, but their choices in casting have been absolutely awful. Johnny Storm is almost certainly the most appealing of the bunch, but look who they had playing him this time. And Miles Teller as Reed? Please. Maybe get a drop dead blonde for Susan? So ****ing dumb.

I disagree that FF is a shitty franchise...2 of the 4 members are funny, engaging characters that can show an excellent dichotomy of the super hero lifestyle. Reed is Reed, so he's going to be dry but insanely intelligent (one of the few in the MU smarter than Tony Stark) and their villains are some of the most powerful in the MU.

It's been done terribly to this point, but there's a lot of fertile ground on both the storytelling and action fronts in there if it's done properly.

It's just that they **** with the core of the franchise itself. Johnny and Susan are supposed to be siblings and that's always an important part of the story. Now she's an ugly faux blonde and he's a black guy. Real smart. Also, enough with the ****ing origins already. We have three FF origin stories - let's just assume people know how they got their powers or can wiki it. And every time it's Doom as the villain, which I get because he's their main baddie, but it just ends up seeming like a full on recycling of the last one, which sucked.

Although I've been a comics guy since I first learned to read, I can't say that my opinions on the films should carry any weight. I hated Iron Man ever since I laid eyes on the character, and I figured that franchise would bomb badly. Very wrong obviously, so I am not a fan of any of the IM films. And Guardians of the Galaxy? I would've nixed that immediately if I ran the studio, but lo and behold, it was a cash cow. I figured I was wrong in judging before watching it, but then I saw it a few weeks ago on tv, and it is a flaming pile of shit, so I don't understand how essentially fringe characters from the edge of the Marvel Universe were able to generate this much buzz and box office receipts, unless Chris Pratt is really that irresistible.

The Spiderman films have been junk, except for #2 with Doc Ock. Cap is uber boring. Avengers is just pure action with very little story. Hulks have stunk. Thor I can't even think about watching.

I don't know, I just don't get the Marvel flicks.

Only Batman was done right by Nolan, except maybe the last one.

I'm excited to see the Batman/Superman movie, but I really don't have major expectations for that either.

I think you're missing what makes the marvel movies good. They're just enjoyable. The people behind the characters are typically enjoyable, funny people who seem to be "human" in superhuman situations.

Why was Iron Man a hit? Because RDJ played an awesome Tony Stark. A Tony Stark that is funny, witty, charming, egotistical and just vulnerable enough to not come off like a dick. Guardians? Chris Pratt was more or less the same as Quill. Bautista was way funnier than I expected as Drax, and Rocket was Rocket. Marvel has done a really good job of identifying the characters they think they can make human and relateable, and building good popcorn flicks around the person as much as it is around the super powered characters.

Nolan's trilogy is outstanding, but it takes itself really, really seriously. Batman is one of a handful of comic book characters who can get away with that. Marvel is knocking it out of the park because they're not trying to turn a comic book into a dramatic piece on the thin line between good and evil, they're just trying to tell a fun story with good visuals and enjoyable characters.

I'm getting into my late 30s now, so maybe I'm just exiting the demographic.

But you're right about the difference in approach. The Marvel movies are popcorn action flicks and the DC movies are trying to be more human-based dramatic pieces. That alone explains why I'm more into the DC side of things, though I think Man of Steel was a flaming pile of shit.

I think Avengers is done well, but is too cartoony. I think they could do better. Spiderman they've wrecked, and this new one they've tapped for the reboot is again just some idiot kid that they will use to tell yet another origin story with. The first Cap bored me to tears, but I haven't yet seen the Winter Soldier yet, so maybe that's better. And yeah, Iron Man they did well with because Downey is the perfect guy to play that part...just never felt a connection with that character. And FF, like I said, even as a kid I never liked despite giving it a try on a few occasions - maybe too much space and alien shit to keep me intrigued. But I did always like Johnny Storm, and if anything, they should've tried to capture that character and build the whole thing around him.

And honestly, the Marvel movies, aside from the Avengers, really just aren't fun. They're totally stupid. Guardians is really awful stuff. I can't believe it's success.
