OT: Politics & News... Have at it.

Except you can see the faces of these people....I think it's not too much to ask someone to show their face when they have to be sworn in, or even vote. If they are not happy, go back to your country (oh I forgot, you left your country because your leaders were oppressing you in the name of religion, yet now you wanna impose your culture on us).

Count, your hatred toward everything that is Jewish is so obvious....but the Jewish people in Canada have never bothered anyone or forced their culture on us. In fact, they are the quietest immigrant group here. We should all appreciate that.

+1

Which they do by the way. As for your second point, you've never been to a Streisand concert have you?

Please. It's a BS election issue, affecting very few people, designed to squeeze votes by scaring people like you and Lou. Well, not really Lou -- he'd vote for Harper no matter what.

It's too bad that this issue has saved the Conservatives from having to talk about the economy, healthcare, poverty and the environment.

2 people in the history of Canada have refused to show their faces in the ceremonial part of the swearing-in.

2.

FYI - Canada has been treating Aboriginals this way for centuries. We imposed our culture on them. Why isn't that being talked about?

I'm surprised the Conservatives are doubling down on this one. While it's an article of clothing that makes lots of us uncomfortable, their attack has a tone not unlike how Chretien was treating in October 1993, which is one of the more famous parts of the PC downfall. This is also putting the NDP in a position to have to defend the Niqab which while is killing them in Quebec it is hurting the vote split the Conservatives needed to win.

I would agree with this.

Although I agree that this is something that does not affect a lot of people, it's a matter of principal. If you open the door a little, what prevents them from opening it wide open.

And I agree that it's too sad that this topic is getting too much coverage compared to other important issues our country is facing, but's in the end, it's the Liberal's and NPD's fault for not making their complain clear.

Trudeau's attitude toward its will probably be the reason I don't end up voting for him (and his party) because this, added to a long list of bullshit, makeup plans, change idea on topics every week isn't inspiring confidence.

Exactly, this is principal. These are canadian values we are protecting. Public opinion polls also support the conservatives stance. I know it's being blown out of proportion because of the elections but it's important we know where our leaders stand. Because the question is, what will be next? Will Trudeau be open to Sharia law like his adviser Omar preaches? Not to mention Trudeau's links to several questionable islamic organizations.

Can you base equality rights on public opinion polls? If that were the case, then one would have to say that Germany was justified in its repression of German jews before WWII because public opinion polls favoured them, or that slavery was justified in the USA because the majority were not opposed to it.

You simply cannot base a determination of minority rights on what the majority wants. That is a recipe for disaster.

I think the niqab issue is ridiculously minor and should not have any bearing on how people vote. Only two chicks have wanted to wear a niqab at a ceremony. Why is this even an election issue?

Those who are worried about it basically need to admit it is only because it is a muslim tradition. Muslims are the bogeymen now.

Because fear can be an effective vote getter.

308 has the liberals winning the most seats for the first time since this campaign began, LPC 127 CPC 124 NDP 85.

Really really need that ndp vote to collapse already, especially in Ontario and split 2:1 for the liberals.

Interesting that the Liberal low is now basically the NDP high seat projection.

Still way too much time for anything to be assumed but most polls are showing the NDP lagging way behind now.

NDP has been wetting the bed ever since they positioned themselves as Harper-lite (no defecits!)

Harper lite in the ROC regarding deficits and trudeau lite in Quebec with the niqab issue.

Trying to please everyone and ending up pleasing no one.

The amazing thing is the "inexperienced" trudeau has out maneuvered the "experienced" mulcair.

If he doesn't resign on October 19th the party will take out the knives by Oct 20th.

My issue with this is two fold. I'm all for equality. If they are allowed to wear the niqab at a citizenship ceremony or for voting, than everyone should have the right to do these same action with the face masked. End of story. Allowing a minority a pass based on religious belief goes against Equality because by deffinition, it is not equal anymore.

My second issue with this is what the niqab represent. Canada values the right of women in our society to be equal to man. The Niqab is a symbol of women oppression. Canada values Women rights but we will allow people that comes over here, with different value, to display a sign of women oppression and allow them to just display it at our canadian citizenship ceremony? This simply doesn't compute.

I get the second argument but is the way to fight oppression telling them they cannot do something?

It was like the PQ saying we think women are equal so they cannot change their name on marriage. It is a tad paternalistic.

Our country, our rules, so yes. When all you see are a pair of eyes, there's a problem. We are telling them not to humiliate their women, so it's a good thing.

So if we pass a law that says NO religious paraphernalia, including niqabs, crosses, stars of david, yamulkas, priest robes etc, you will be fine with it?
