OT: The Because Science Thread (Now With Aliens!)

"Spooky" to a scientist: Some sort of previously unobserved natural phenomena that previous cosmology work had predicted, usually decades ago.

"Spooky" to a science journalist:

Not to get too critical here, but does anyone else feel like our societal decline really started with the major expansion of satellite and cable packages? It really was the beginning of a viewership competition that led to science shows competing with pseudo-science, new programs competing with news-entertainment etc...

Add the massive internet expansion of the late 90s, and smartphone invasion in the new millennium - and well, here we are.

We used to spend evenings and Saturday mornings consuming television media, then it was consumed on the internet, and now it's broadcast to our hands every second, 7 days a week.

Add to that, social media has given everyone an elevated opinion of themselves - and the opportunity to reach a broad audience with uneducated opinions. It's no wonder people can't get their facts straight, and have lost faith in scientists.

I think, much like sports, rapid expansion gave way to a watering down of what it meant to be "intelligent".

I'd love to know how much electricity is used every day for the stupid shit people do on their phones around the world. From stupid staged videos, to recycled memes, to unsolicited dick pics.

Cool, let’s let that guy launch 20000 satellites into space over the next decade.

A sign of our decline as a species is that he's viewed as some sort of visionary. He does nothing but take ideas others had before him and do it at least slightly worse.

Yeah, all kinds of people worked out how to re-use rockets, see it every day.

So a worse version of the space shuttle? It's a 50 yr old concept that has been picked up by a few billionaires because the US government can't be bothered to properly fund NASA.
