OT: The News Thread

Re: OT - The News Thread

yeah, I get what you're saying....for the gym though, I understand heavy water use. A lot of pre work out supplements prime the muscles to be able to accept a significant amount of water....makes them stronger, more flexible, less prone to injury, etc. At that point you're not just replacing fluid lost through sweating.

Water also allows for faster protein absorbtion, which is key both before and after weight training. A litre or more of my water intake on work out days is just to help wash down protein & supplements.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Hey, when I exercise, I drink a fair bit of water myself. It also helps with detoxing. You definitely need it when exerting yourself above the normal range.

It's also beneficial to replace many of the liquids that people ingest with water.

Agreed....soda is basically carbonated water, sugar and death...most bottled juices are basically just sugar water and though better for you than soda, not very good for you.

milk is actually pretty decent as a post work out drink if you don't have a better protein source on hand

It's probably the most overlooked portion of most peoples diets though, the amount of calorie intake there is in what they drink. You can have a reasonably healthy, balanced diet...but a few glasses of milk, juice, etc a day and the weight gain comes.

Agree 100%

Although I'd say don't touch anything but organic milk. I have an almost entirely organic diet, but milk and meats are the only ones I do for health reasons. The hormones and antibiotics used in the production of milk is every bit as deadly, if not more so, than soda pop (which I almost never touch).

Yeah, I've seen people on diets guzzling Gatorade and wondering why they don't shed pounds. heh.

So true about most juices as well - just check the list of ingredients and fructose/sucrose are usually right at the top.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I like having a gatorade while I play hockey.

It stops me from guzzling water, and it does have items that help during the game.

I never understood people pounding one back after the workout though. Water is fine then.

Re: OT - The News Thread

People pound it back after a workout because it properly replaces all of the electrolytes that are lost during the conditioning process. It was specifically designed to be used during and immediately after intense physical activity. The problem is that you see so many people living sedentary lifestyles that simply drink it because it tastes good, and without any exercise that's when the sugar starts to take its toll.

Zeke is now sub-200lbs for the first time in years, after topping out at 215lbs at the end of last summer.

Zeke is officially 2 weeks smoke-free.

Re: OT - The News Thread

A few news items:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/22/new-mexico-state-legislat_n_433325.html

New Mexico state representative Brian Egolf has introduced a bill to move the state's money out of Bank of America and into banks and credit unions chartered in New Mexico.

"I saw the Move Your Money video the day it came out and thought it made a lot of sense," Egolf told HuffPost.

So the Santa Fe Democrat wants to move as much money as he possibly can -- that would be $1.4 billion.

Egolf's bill would direct the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration to "give a preference to a community bank to act as the fiscal agent of the general fund operating cash depository account."

Egolf said the account, which is essentially the state's checking account, holds $1.4 billion and is managed by Bank of America. Egolf's bill directs state officials to study the feasibility of dividing up the account and distributing it between community banks and credit unions throughout the state. He said he discussed the measure with Gov. Bill Richardson (D) for an hour on Thursday, and that the governor supported the measure.

http://rawstory.com/2010/01/democrats-dropping-ban-preexisting-conditions/

Among the casualties of President Barack Obama's healthcare agenda may be those who suffer from pre-existing medical conditions and can't get insurance.

Thought the ban on denying health insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions was going the way of the dodo? Not so fast.

An astute blogger noted that the new proposals floated by Democrats in the wake of the massive health care bill's collapse is a provision that would bar denying coverage for those with pre-existing conditions -- but only if they were under 19. "Did someone just chuck pre-existing conditions overboard?" he wrote.

Among the measures Democrats are considering, the New York Times noted Friday, "Insurers could not deny coverage to children under the age of 19 on account of pre-existing medical conditions."

"The only reason to specify that children under the age of 19 won't be denied coverage is because you plan on letting everyone 19 and over BE denied coverage for pre-existing conditions," blogger John Aravosis replied.

So if you're keeping score at home...the new health care bill is more or less the same as the old one...only this one makes it illegal to not have health insurance.

as if this whole song and ****ing dance wasn't meant to benefit the existing monolith.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Congrats, zeke.

Just curious if you decided to use the e-cig.

I'm now 10+ weeks smoke free and getting my ass in shape.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I got the e-cigs, and I plan on quitting after I get down to 160 or so.

I was focused and all ready to quit, but the e-cigs kept running out of juice after 20 inhales or so, so I buckled and kept smoking. Know of anything I might be doing wrong, BL?

And other than the problems I'm having, which are probably due to something I'm screwing up, the e-cigs work great. Not quite as satisfying as a cancer stick, but definitely the next best thing.

It sounds like you're using prefilled cartridges.

You can refill the carts by buying the juice - these guys are great and based in the GTA: www.vapables.com

20 drags sounds about right, frankly. Afterward, just pull the cart out and put drops on the cotton until the liquid starts to pool. Once it does this, it's useful to stick a pin or paperclip in to let the liquid soak through and get past any air bubbles. If it's still looking very moist or pooled, dab it on a piece of paper or napkin.

It should be good to go for another 20 drags or so. Also, you should draw differently than a cigarette - a weaker, steady draw for about 5-7 seconds at most.

You can buy empty cartridges - I use one for about a week and then replace it.

There's also the direct drip method. Take the cotton thingy out of the cartridge and put two or three drops right on the bridge of the atomizer. That will only last about 10 draws but many find it more satisfying.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Oh, what model did you get - did you go to HappyVaper.com?

I have tried a few and the 510 model at HV is the best, imo.

You may also want to buy liquid with a higher nicotine content.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Another thing - you should clean your atomizer each night. Just blow in the battery end of the thing until the excess liquid comes out and set it upright so it drains and then dries - leave it that way for about 24 hrs.

I switch atomizers every day.
