OT: The News Thread

Re: OT - The News Thread

My ex lost her brother and step father to a wrong place, wrong time murder at the hands of cartel members last spring.

I love the place, but this escalation in the violence has definitely made me put more thought into wanting to be there on a more permanent basis.

This is a terrible externality of a ridiculous U.S domestic drug policy.

Monsanto's GMO corn linked to organ failure in rats:

In a study released by the International Journal of Biological Sciences, analyzing the effects of genetically modified foods on mammalian health, researchers found that agricultural giant Monsanto's GM corn is linked to organ damage in rats.
According to the study, which was summarized by Adam Shake at Twilight Earth, "Three varieties of Monsanto's GM corn - Mon 863, insecticide-producing Mon 810, and Roundup® herbicide-absorbing NK 603 - were approved for consumption by US, European and several other national food safety authorities."
Monsanto gathered its own crude statistical data after conducting a 90-day study, even though chronic problems can rarely be found after 90 days, and concluded that the corn was safe for consumption. The stamp of approval may have been premature, however.
In the conclusion of the IJBS study, researchers wrote:
"Effects were mostly concentrated in kidney and liver function, the two major diet detoxification organs, but in detail differed with each GM type. In addition, some effects on heart, adrenal, spleen and blood cells were also frequently noted. As there normally exists sex differences in liver and kidney metabolism, the highly statistically significant disturbances in the function of these organs, seen between male and female rats, cannot be dismissed as biologically insignificant as has been proposed by others. We therefore conclude that our data strongly suggests that these GM maize varieties induce a state of hepatorenal toxicity....These substances have never before been an integral part of the human or animal diet and therefore their health consequences for those who consume them, especially over long time periods are currently unknown."
Monsanto has immediately responded to the study, stating that the research is "based on faulty analytical methods and reasoning and do not call into question the safety findings for these products."
The IJBS study's author Gilles-Eric Séralini responded to the Monsanto statement on the blog, Food Freedom, "Our study contradicts Monsanto conclusions because Monsanto systematically neglects significant health effects in mammals that are different in males and females eating GMOs, or not proportional to the dose. This is a very serious mistake, dramatic for public health. This is the major conclusion revealed by our work, the only careful reanalysis of Monsanto crude statistical data."

Re: OT - The News Thread

Shit...I've had a serious hate on for Monsanto since I became aware of what they were up to 6-8 years ago.

I'd say they've been near the top of the evil ladder with Halliburton, KBR, Xe (formerly known as Blackwater), Diebold , etc for quite some time now.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Legalizing drugs will just put the cartels out of business. What are they going to do then?

Start living the straight life?

I am talking about Mexico.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Monsanto and Blackwater are actually cartoon super-evil. It's ridiculous.

"Oh, so you want to 'grow your own stock' to 'preserve biodiversity'....well isn't that special."

they'll lose the funds to pay for ammunition, security, etc. It only pays to be in crime if you can make money off of it, and most of those guys are in because it pays. If you take away their primary reason for existing, yeah, a lot of them WILL take up the straight life. Or at least a lot of them won't have the money and influence to maintain a lifestyle of thuggery.

They'll go back to doing the same shit they were doing before drugs became such a massive revenue pipeline for them.

Kidnappings, prostitution, human smuggling, tourist scams/robberies, etc, etc, etc.

They just won't be able to afford to rival the Mexican military anymore and will be forced to go back to the shadows where organized crime "belongs" in a society.

Re: OT - The News Thread

Handicapping the illegal drug trade through legalization will do more to help the Americans than to help the Mexicans and Colombians. Both fiscally (less in prison, less budgeted to combating drugs), and societally (less black market money being funneled to Al Qaeda, and the like).

That said, there would be a residual impact, and ultimately forcing these thugs into pettier crime is better than having them emboldened by the billion dollar under ground drug trade, which has led to heavily funded militias that are armed to the teeth and unencumbered by concern for citizens.

Re: OT - The News Thread

On the positive, the largest state in the U.S has a bill coming up for vote to bring about legalization.

Not for medical use, but flat out legalization. The Cali weed market is huge already and only partially served by local grown weed. Full legalization in Cali would definitely cut into Mexican Cartel profits.

The oddest, and most telling individual truth that proves the insanity of current drug laws and enforcement strategy is that the two most dominant forces in the equation. The criminal underworld, and the governments aligned against them both seemingly want the same thing.

For the drugs to be illegal, and the more illegal, the better.

From the Cartel's standpoint, the worse the punishments, the more scarce the domestically produced supply becomes, leaving an even larger hole in the market for them to fill, allowing as well for higher prices due to higher risk, which obviously equals an even more insane level of profit (1 pound of good quality hydroponic ganj costs approx 150-200 dollars to be grown throughout the lifecycle of the planet, and will sell in a U.S city for up to 3000 U.S)

The government apparatus that has grown to meet the demands of current enforcement policies also wants these drugs to remain illegal. Without the seizures of personal property and cash of drug offenders, they would lose a massive source of funding....as well, without a high number of drug arrests, they would likely lose a significant amount of Federal funding, leading to a severe retraction of police force sizes.

It's absolutely sickening that the desires of both leviathans are so closely aligned.

Diebold? Really? Enlighten me on this one, please. Is it the voting machine scam?

Re: OT - The News Thread

It'll be interesting to see how FoxNews deals with a drug legalization debate.

They've gone so far into the anti-government dogma (they were criticizing the government for even considering increasing the laws on labelling salt content in packaged foods, as "the government telling them what to eat") that'll it be interesting to see how the "anti-government" dogma clashes with the "drugs are bad" dogma.

Re: OT - The News Thread

A couple buddies and I just got back from Pirce Chopper where they are selling four 24 bottle packs of water for just $8.64 -- we have 30 cases that we're giving to the Salvation Army (720 bottles) and are going to try and get another 30 cases to send to Haiti. Even a couple cases helps if you can donate it to the nearest SA or Red Cross.
