OT: The News Thread

Yeah, like, it's crazy to think of that. Not even counting earth moving around the run or the sun through the Galaxy, the Earth still rotates at like 1000 mph, or about twice the speed of a plane. Like, if you time travelled one second, just factoring in Earth's rotation and nothing more, you basically go from the CN Tower to Union station. If you're off by like a millisecond, then suddenly you're smashing through the walls of where you wanted to end up, or end up appearing in the middle of the ocean.

please no spoilers for avengers end game

And now for something different (but not surprising)

And just a little less than he's going to cost you in dollars per game shortly.

Eventually, he could bankrupt the entire NHL. Like a an asteroid of unimaginable magnitude and talent wiping out the entire hockey world.

We may need another 3 work stoppages just to contain him. There will need to he a "Poehling Rule" implemented to contain the salary cap damage. Also to implement 1 v 5 hockey just so we can restore competitive balance.

Horrible sights as Notre Dame is burning to the ground right now. Likely due to some renovation/construction work, but the entire roof and spire have all collapsed.

Finally a step towards protecting female athletes.

Small step, but progress none the less

Caster Semenya lost her appeal Wednesday against rules designed to decrease naturally high testosterone levels in some female runners.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport's panel of three judges gave a complex verdict and "dismissed both requests for arbitration" from Semenya and the governing body of track and field.

The judges ruled 2-1 that "on the basis of the evidence submitted by the parties, such discrimination is a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of achieving the IAAF's aim of preserving the integrity of female athletics in the Restricted Events."

Semenya, a two-time Olympic champion in the 800 metres, will now be forced to medicate to suppress her testosterone levels if she wants to defend her world title in September in Doha, Qatar.
so she will need to lower her testosterone levels below 5 nanomoles per liter of blood. The average woman has around 1-3. Men have up to 3 times that. Considering that the limit that they wanted before was 10, and its now down to 5, tells me that semenya is significantly above 10.

Last time her testosterone was medically lowered in 2011 her dominance decreased significantly, and again, that was at levels of 10 nanonoles per liter of blood.

At step towards a more even playing field

I dunno, the best athletes in the world often have genetic advantages that y'know, make them the best athlete in the world. see Phelps, Michael.

Semenya is just being punished for her freakish genetics.

Now, I think her case is different than someone born male who transitions to female during life. that's a new can of worms.

but for Semenya, she is literally being punished because she is a genetic freak. and those freaky genes happen to help her dominate in her chosen sport.

How is she being punished? She is going to be limited to the same testosterone levels as the women she competes against. (Slightly higher actually.)

That's not the same as having physical attributes that lead to being good at a sport. That's closer to doping. Now its the case of her body naturally producing that level of testosterone, but its still a hormonal advantage that allows her to dominate other women. That's different than being tall, being big, having long arms.

some people are taller than others, mostly because of genetics. this gives them an advantage in competition.

some people have super webbed feet, because of genetics. this makes them better swimmers.

some people have long arms, because of genetics. this gives them a competitive advantage.

her genetics also give her a competitive advantage. it just happens to be in the form of testosterone. I'm not sure how that is distinguishable from other genetic advantages.

and she is being punished by having to modify her body's natural chemistry in order to compete. modifications which will eliminate the genetic competitive advantage she enjoyed.

and let's be real here. the rule that was introduced by the IAAF is explicitly tailored for Semenya. it was drafted in such a way as to omit the distances that the other woman who has a similar condition competes in (I think these were shorter races).

At the end of the day, to me, its about women being allowed to compete against those who are biologically and hormonally women. If that means creating guidelines for what that is, so be it.

The reason there are women's sports in the first place we because of the understanding that men, biologically and hormonally were at a massive advantage over women and that in any best on best competition women would never be included. To have a woman who's body hormonally places her in the grey area between men and women compete against women is to go against the reason for women's sports in the first place. And it leads to one of two solutions. Either allow every other woman to dope to the level of testosterone semenya has in the name of fairness, or bring semenya down to the level of every other woman.

Anything else, including the status quo semenya wants in order to dominate is to create two tiers of women's sports, the natural born women's tier which doesnt stand a chance of winning and the intersex/transfer tier which wins everything
