OT: The News Thread

Re: OT - The News Thread

It will apply to any idiot who shouldn't be within 5 meters of the security zone.

Wow, harsh. What about a guy not aware of the rule and some cop demands his papers....that'll go over well.

Hopefully they give the cops german shepherds to complete the picture.

Re: OT - The News Thread

At least it's equal opportunity nazi-ism...unlike Arizona where you need to look Mexican to get the preferential treatment.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I would imagine that there will be signs to stay 5 metres away from the fence... and if there aren't, what the hell is the big fascination with being right up next to the fence anyway? Do people really need to be standing right up against it? If you want to be respected and maybe have your concerns listened to, then don't be a crazy lunatic, protest all you want but do it in peace. All it would take is for a few idiots with bolt cutters and they could cut a hole in the fence big enough to get through in about 10 seconds so yeah... stay the **** away from the fence....

Well to be fair, 5m is not right next to the fence....that's a pretty sizable distance. I don't know of any fascination, but it seems pretty ridiculous to expect people to know to stay 10 feet back of a fence...hopefully they do put up some signs for folks.

How could you not tell that you are entering a restricted zone? There are 5 meter high fences and countless police patrolling around.

You'd have to be an idiot not to think, "hmm. Maybe I shouldn't be here".

Well maybe if your not trying to cross the fence you might think your still in Canada where you don't have to identify yourself to a cop just because your walking down the street...some folks might get annoyed by that idea. Doesn't make them idiots or anything of the sort.

Re: OT - The News Thread

It's not an average Friday in Canada. The worlds top dignitaries are in town to discuss geo-politics on steroids.

Perhaps people should be alittle less bullheaded and read the paper.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion on here about the new powers that Toronto police now possess---not even a page and a half since yesterday. It's a pretty shocking erosion of basic civil liberties fundamental tenets of a "free" society. And the fact that McGuinty and the police got together and passed it in secret, with no public debate and without even informing the public is even more amazing. The reasoning is obvious---Bill Blair and McGuinty know that if they'd informed the public, this new law would have quickly faced a challenge under the charter of rights and freedoms, and been killed before the G20. But if any challenge even happens now, by the time it succeeds the G20 summit will be over already anyways. Frankly, both of them should lose their jobs over this.

Re: OT - The News Thread

I don't think much will come of it, most people seem to understand the necessity of the law...I do agree it should have been more open as my concern is for the unlucky joe who doesn't know about the law and gets into a dispute with the cops over it.

That is the biggest problem with it. Anybody who's walking around outside that fence is fully within their legal rights to tell a cop who demands that they produce ID and submit to a search to take a hike. They shouldn't have to worry about secret laws applied to vague zones that will result in them being arrested, and/or hit with a large fine and jail time. And the McGuinty government and Blair coming out today and claiming that they in fact didn't pass the law in secret, and did in fact make the announcement very public by posting the law online on an obscure government website a week ago is laughable.

It's an outrageous and summary erosion of civil liberties. It is police state shit.

Then again, so is pouring over a billion dollars into 'security' for this - we're really into a surreal realm here.

As for discussing it around here, one quickly grows tired of the far right flinging labels dispense with thinking/real discussion, although I'm sure that since McGuinty did it, there may be more 'openness' among that group to considering its perniciousness.
