OT: The News Thread

It sucks that this is a thing, but we really need to put this type of stuff into our city planning. Strategically eliminating traffic access and creating pedestrian centric neighbourhoods that festivals like these will naturally gravitate towards using. Even if you're not willing to make these permanent, installing hydraulic bollards that allow the city to make certain neighbourhoods temporarily inaccessible to vehicle traffic is long past due.

Apparently they had big garbage trucks sealing off access but they were moved to allow some cars to get through. But the one guy just floored it when he got past the blockade.

And yes we do need pedestrian only streets but Fraser Street is a major North-South artery with businesses that rely on street parking.

Back in the 70's, a stretch of Robson Street was made pedestrian only. It was known as Robsonstrasse, I guess, because Germans used to be a thing in Vancouver before the city was overrun with Asians. But by the time I moved there in 1992, Robson was for cars along its entire length, from Stanley Park all the way to BC Place.

Any street can be made pedestrian only.

and that's only one layer of properly planning out areas to protect pedestrians. Trees, concrete flower boxes, sidewalk bollards are all extremely useful to keep vehicles and pedestrians separated.

Unfortunately so-called "progress" eliminated truly unique neighborhoods such as:

Before he became "famous", Tommy Chong (re: Cheech & Chong) was a musician that had a gig in Hogan's Alley.
Tommy also said that the origin of the "Sargent Stedenko" character in "Up In Smoke" was based on a real life Vancouver cop who was always trying to bust hippies for possession of grass back in the 60's.
