I just have a hard time granting the man any substantive degree of praise. Every single Westernized country in the world has universal health care access; if it wasn't Douglas it would have been some other politician.

I can see having a problem with it, but IMO the FLQ crisis was a good example of when the force/techniques the government used ARE justified, and how to use them in a relatively measured way and return to normal levels of policing and security in a reasonable amount of time. What Trudeau did is (mostly) only unjustifiable if any of the 3 following take place:
1. people arrested are systematically abused
2. the threat is not real
3. parts of the new, stricter/less free measures stay in place after the threat is gone
While one can argue about how many people were arrested, none of those 3 were the case in the FLQ crisis.

Meh, an export ban only lasts until you lobby hard enough to get them. Frankly, they owe us a bone for the lifting that has been done during their Afghanistan endeavour.
Failing that though, why even bother with a 5th gen at this point? There's no pressing need for our military to have a 5th gen fighter at this point (especially considering the fact that the only operational one, as you've pointed it, the US isn't exporting.) There are a half dozen gen 4 fighters, with impressive service records that could have closed the gap...given our guys quality gear to run in the interim while the development of the F-35 finished up. If the F-35 flopped, then you can take a look at the Typhoon 2 or hopefully the yanks have allowed export of the F-22 by then.
If the F-35 turns out to be the all purpose beast it was designed to be...great...then buy it once it's proven itself a bit, the US wasn't going to be too cranky about us not diving in previously, not with their trade imbalance.

If you think history should hang a former PM who wasted adscam money, then Mulroney could have multiple nooses around his neck. Meech Lake; Charlottown Accord; Airbus... every single one of those were many more times the money wasted in adscam.
