OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

I'm shit talking a team that has collapsed from contender status with a dirt cheap owner and a known spineless, weasel word spewing front office. He thinks we should blow up a team with Matthews-Marner-Tavares-Nylander-Rielly-Barrie-Freddy because they're not tough.

Big, big difference.

I was just kidding around. But it would be fun if that nickname stuck, in this thread that is.

Some people like GEEMAN still think AA left the team in rough shape eh...

Vladdy is a generational talent.

Jansen is a high end catching talent.

Alford was supposed to be good.

Brian Parker drafted Bo (Atkins never saw him play).

No contracts signed beyond 2020 under AA.

AA did an incredible job building a winner while making sure no contracts crippled the team.

The Donaldson led window obviously could have been extended. Instead they went with fake contending signings with Morales, Garcia, Pearce and even Jose.

Good. The Jays need an upgrade at 1B (i.e. an actual major leaguer, not Rowdy Tellez) but they don't need a full-time DH. Any smart AL admin should see the DH spot as a chance to load manage. Unless you have Edgar Martinez or David Ortiz, keep the DH spot open.

Question for those of you who are very knowledgable of baseball...... should the Jay's continue to pursue price?

Imo, it really is a no lose situation.

If price does have another good season, and the Jay's dont, price would make a really good trade chip at the deadline (I know that past transactions by this jay management team have been depressing at best), and what if a few of the players came through with career seasons .... this team could be in a legitimate wild card battle this season.
Is this too optimistic?

Does price still have 17-20 wins in him.
If ryu stays healthy, can he win 17 in this division?

If this does happen and the kids take the next step, can this team be a serious contender for a wild card spot?

Would trading for price be a good move or would it be wise to just stay this course of accumulating financial strength through player control and allow this team to stumble and fall.

We should get him imo. What do we have to lose picking him up for half price and half Price? Plus why should Montreal have the only overpaid and overrated Price to cheer on?

Price makes TONS of sense for the Jays IF done right.

His contract doesn't get in the way of the pending Vlad, Bo, Biggio and Jansen contracts.

Shoemaker will get hurt at somepoint and Trent Thorton likely doesn't last in the rotation. I also have a feeling that one of Roark or Anderson has a crappy season.

A Price trade works for both the Jays and Red Sox.

I would like to see the Jays get Will Harris for the bullpen.

This team still has a laughable payroll at 80 million (24th in the league). More moves should take place.

I fear the stubborness to give "their guys" like Fisher, Drury, McKinney and Hernandez too many chances is probably gonna be harmful to this season.

Thames is junk.

Can’t hit LHP, below average D at 1B.

His D was basically average last season (slightly below, but so slightly it basically doesn't matter). I'll take a strong side platoon stick who can play the corner OF in a pinch and gives us meh but functioning defence at 1B, as long as he's cheap.

Im all for getting Price if it makes sense but the Ryu deal doesnt nescessarily mean they need to add more deals now. This could be like Lester for the Cubs

I'm warming up to the Price idea.

Still have a hard time giving the red sox a red carpet to resigning Betts next offseason. Would be nice to make them pay for us taking Price.

Price
Ryu
Pearson

heading down the stretch could be an interesting top of the rotation if healthy.

May as well be us benefitting from the salary move that Boston is almost 100% going to make. They're not letting Mookie walk. Someone will take Price. Extract as much salary and player value from the trade as possible and keep it moving.

Whats a realistic return?

More salary eaten? a prospect? or the highly unlikely Benintendi?

I think there's two main avenues they can take, with different stuff obviously coming back. The biggest thing joining them is that there's probably 40-60 million dollars in lost value in Price when you take durability concerns into account. So that either has to be made up entirely monetarily (which defeats the purpose...you're just shifting money from one column to another on your balance sheet), in player value (that's still a lot of value to make up) or a mix of both.

If you're going pure for player value, I don't think Benintendi is a reach at all. He's about 40-50 million in surplus value over the next few years.

More likely though imo, is the Sox eating a significant chunk (every dollar about the cap is pretty sacred to them with it's compounding effect on the luxury tax) and firing a bunch of good prospects out the door. If I'm Boston, I point at the older Cole Hamels signing a 1x18 deal and argue that Price should age similarly. So putting his market dollar value (minus some additional risk) at around 50 million on a 3 yr deal. I try to get you to take 2 my top 10 prospects if I eat 11-13 million per. Arguing that you're getting market value Price at that number and prospects of largely your choosing to make up for the risk of the 3 year term.

If Boston isn't willing to eat any salary. Yeah, Benintendi or fuck off.

Bichette
Benintendi
Guerrero

Biggio
Gurriel
Jansen
