OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

You guys make it sound like 40m in 2039 is gonna be huge $$.

There are 27 players in the nba making that coin today. Ohtani got 70. Soto got 51. Plus we don’t know how salary was structured, including deferral.

That number really isn’t crazy at all for a guy whose been a top 10 player in baseball since he was 21.

Yeah, I mean 15 years ago, the top MLB salary was 33M for A-Rod, second place was Vernon Wells at 21M. A-Rod was like the Ohtani contract at the time. So 40m in 2039 is probably more like 25m in today's dollars. Probably still too much for a 40 year old who's probably not been useful in 3-4 years, but possibly not outlandish. And yeah, especially if you defer 100-200m of that.

If you count his last few years in StL, the last 15 years of Pujols career he put up 55 WAR. So.. yeah, actually 585 might not actually be ridiculous, if he can put up another 4-5 years of elite production before trailing off.

Okay, convinced. Sign me up. Again, it's not my money.

Yep. Before too long that will be similar money to the $25M they’re paying Springer this year and next (and last year for that matter) to be around replacement level. A big market team like Toronto can afford one empty contract like that on the books even if Vladdy is done in his mid-30s, like Miggy.

Anyway, they risk-managed their way to Vlad being due for a massive payday, and they compounded the problem by so publicly, desperately, talking about the hundreds of millions they had to pay for a star. Of course Vlad was going to want the same treatment.

Only reason I'd still want him back at that is because it's not my money. Otherwise, yeah, that's a lot.
You blame all parties for letting this BS to get to his point

But you dont double down on another fuck up because some dork in New York whipped his dick out and handed out 765 mil to a soon to be worst contract in MLB.

Only the Dodgers and Mets have blown their brains out in the entire league and MLB is beyond a joke

David Ortiz and Nelson Cruz defied the odds and were productive until they were 40. They are unicorns, though. Even surefire Hall of Famers like Pujols and Miggy Cabrera were shells of their former selves for several years at that point.

The truth is that MLB teams (and other sports too) have figured this out, and stopped paying guys big money that late into their career, with only a couple of recent exceptions.

Vladdy's obviously determined to test free agency, which is his right. Like the Yankees did with Aaron Judge, let him see what's out there and prepare to match at the end. If the Mets end up going as high as $585, you can still pay that much if you want/have to, but if other offers top out at $450 or $500 million, you obviously match or beat the offer and bring him back.

2022 (23): 3.3 WAR (59th in MLB) 132 wRC+ (42nd in MLB)
2023 (24): 1.3 WAR (183rd in MLB) 118 wRC+ (93rd in MLB)

Ehhhh...I have no idea where you're getting those rankings from. I assume you're including non qualified.

MLB wRC+ rankings:

2020: 110wRC+ (73rd)
2021: 166wRC+ (2nd)
2022: 132wRC+ (27th)
2023: 118wRC+ (49th)
2024: 165wRC+ (6th)

But to Mbow's point:

Rankings since 2020: 142 wRC+(12th)
Since 2021: 145wRC+ (9th)

Those are Fangraphs WAR and wRC+. I did put a qualifier of 230 PA's to include 2020 and then forgot to take it off. But that shouldn't affect WAR since compiling numbers is part of the stat.

Francis did not do well again today (5ER in 2.2, 3BB) and his ERA is up over 12 on the Spring. Don’t really care, as long as it isn’t a sign of injury.

The rotation has some potential this year, just need everyone to stay healthy and bounce backs from Bassitt and Scherzer. Unfortunately there isn’t much depth. I still wish they’d hung on to Nick Frasso. Although he’s not busting into the Dodgers rotation anytime soon so they could probably get him back.

Francis was pretty fluky last year i wouldn't expect much more than fungible 4/5 starter stuff from him this year. Wouldn't be surprised to see him implode completely tbh but i'm not expecting that.

Yeah, would love him to be like a "come from nowhere" ace. Like Ragans has been for KC, he was like waived/DFA multiple times, and then something happened and suddenly he's an ace. But odds are, Francis was a one hit wonder, and if he can even just be a decent 5th starter, that'd be good enough.
