OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

He was really, really bad last year.

For example, 111th out of 128 qualified hitters in wOBA. And negative defensive value in a corner.

Slightly below average hitter at a 95wrc+. Passable fielding. Good baserunning. 1.5war type pace.

He was far far better than a whole bunch of other jays.

He's looking nice and, er, springy in the field and on the bases too.

And he should be able to get plenty of rest this year with our better depth so that would hopefully preserve him a bit.

If he can keep this up then he might be able to back up CF when varsho's back which could free us up to call up a guy like Barger/Orelvis/Jimenez if they deserve it.

He's
Springer or Roden, dont care which.

That said Lukes has looked like a professional so far, i dont mind if say Schneider is cut for one of the kids if he's not raking vs LHP.

Straw is fodder

The one thing about Springer is he's still a plus in RF/LF so like, in no world will he be LeMahieu bad, but if the stick can bounce back a little thats a win
Springer was a bottom-5 defensive RF last year.

He was a net negative offensive player last year too.

His entire value came from base running. He is still a solid base runner, you have to give him that.

Best case scenario IMO is Springer stays relatively healthy and gets pushed out of regular playing time by Roden. He’s only got one year on his deal after this one, and at $25M he’s not going to bring much back in a trade.

It would be about getting out of that 25M for next year, not about getting something good back.

Last year

Guerrero 697pa 165wrc+
(Lukes 91pa 132wrc+)
Santander 665pa 129wrc+
(Wagner 86pa 125wrc+)
Jimenez 210pa, 102wrc+
Varsho 513pa 99wrc+
Springer 614pa 95wrc+
Clement 452pa, 94wrc,+
Kirk 386pa 94wrc+
Gimenez 633pa 83wrc+
Schneider 454pa, 80wrc+
Bichette 336pa 71wrc+
Barger 225pa 70wrc+
(Loperfido 144pa, 61wrc+)

Springer wasn't good last year but that's just slightly below average hitting compared to a whole bunch of guys who were way way way worse than that.

A huge win would be if Springer played well enough that we're able to trade him at the deadline.

If you mean trade his contract....i don't think that's happening. His contract is a sunk cost now. Shouldn't even waste time thinking about it anymore. Only question should be whether he can help the team this year and imo he wasn't terrible enough last yewr thst having a decent bounceback this year should be too crazy a surprise.

They aren't going to be bad enough to go scorched earth and fire everyone out of a Canon.

But I can see one of their "young" outfield guys (probably Roden, maybe Barger) out playing Springer and them making a move to get more playing time for a Buffalo Boy.

its difficult to ignore the downward trend for Springer. wRC+ this decade:

2020: 143
2021: 140
2022: 133
2023: 104
2024: 95

He turns 36 this year and has a long history of injuries.

Best bet for a bounce back might be to just make him the full-time DH.

Players with much worse trendlines than that bounce back all the time though. Like if he came in at a 110 or higher this year it wouldn't be shocking at all.

Once you accept that his contract is sunk he becomes a much more attractive potentially useful piece.
