OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Bo Bichette's career walk rate is 5.7%. Here are his yearly walk rates: 6.6%, 3.9%, 5.8%, 5.9%, 4.5%, 6.0%, 6.4%

The average walk rate for MLB hitters is between 8.1 - 8.4%.

The average chase rate (O-Swing %) for MLB hitters is 28-29%. Bo Bichette's career Chase Rate is 36.7%.

By Year: 36.7, 43.4, 38.1, 35.2, 36.4, 37.1, 35.2.

I've heard Eno Sarris talk about hitters and aging data multiple times, and these stats do not get better when any player hits 30, but especially so for free swingers. The #'s almost inevitably get increasingly worse as the player ages going forward into their 30s.

gonna need to see the data on that tbh.

Bo has always had excellent contact rate outside the zone - and calling him a free swinger isn't really an accurate description of him at all - he is elite at protecting the plate, especially with 2 strikes.

I wonder if Bassitt needs to miss a turn in the rotation, otherwise we are back to a 6 man, which is probably unsmart

unlike a couple weeks back - right now is actually where a 6 man rotation makes sense, just because we have this long stretch with no off days.

Bo is 27, and I said earlier that I'd be on board signing him to a 7-year deal. I'd love a shorter deal but we have to be realistic here too. I'm just saying he's unlikely to age well. He is one of those rare guys with an exceptional hit tool, so it's certainly possible he can continue to outrun the numbers for longer than most guys.

And yes, he makes excellent contact in his early to mid 20s, which does make him an outlier already. But these guys do tend to hit a wall at a certain point, often earlier than expected. That's not to say they can't adjust their games to account for this, or that Bo will suddenly be useless in 4 years. The data also shows that great players have a tendency to be good for longer, based largely on talent overcoming the aging curve.

But Father Time remains, as always, undefeated.

If it takes 8-9 it takes 8-9, letting him walk is worse, especially when you are a financial giant and can deal with an albatross later on in life.
