Damn it, I was just about to say his comp is Chandler SimpsonYeah, maybe more like a Myles Straw, Jake Meyers, or Chandler Simpson type. If his defense is good enough, could be a platoon option.
The real issue is, how could there not have been a better return for Gaus? Forget getting two prospects. Just the best prospect the market would yield. I don’t know how that could be Bateman or anyone with that low a ceiling.
But he's never had babip this high at any stop before AAA this year.
and a .393babip is wholly unsustainable. If you generously adjust him down to a still high .340-.350 babip he loses 100pts+ of OPS.
The rental SP market was set, and kinda weak based on Skubal/Peralta dealsThe real issue is, how could there not have been a better return for Gaus? Forget getting two prospects. Just the best prospect the market would yield. I don’t know how that could be Bateman or anyone with that low a ceiling.
Myles Straw (without the elite CF D) is a better lazy comp for Bateman than Lukes. And Straw has had like a 99th percentile career outcome for a player with that profile.
Regardless there is no real reason not to give Bateman the lion's share of CF work this year once you can comfortably wave the white flag.Straw had a 3 WAR season before his bat fell apart, so it's not like his profile couldn't be a good every day MLB option in CF. Straw had a nice profile until he hit AAA where he didn't struggle, but he stopped looking like someone with a plus hit tool. It was his bat falling apart that turned him into a 4th OF.
So yeah, as a lazy comp it's fine but I'd argue Bateman has a more advanced hit tool that survived the jump to AAA, but probably not as good a glove in CF (which in fairness to Bateman, Straw didn't start flashing until his 25 yr old season)
We would have 1 additional year i believe if 27 is wipedIf 2027 is lost, don’t we only have like 1-2 years of control on Soriano and others?
he's never hit the ball this hard before either.
Yeah, .393 is unsustainable but 340-350 is a pretty average babip in AAA for someone with speed. Babip is also influenced by batted ball profile. This guy has hit 78% of his balls in play on the ground or LD and his average EV is good (not great, but good). Couple that with 60-70 speed and yeah, your babip is going to be comfortably above league average.
With that said it depends on what your expectations are. Would I have traded him for Gausman? Fuck no, I don't understand that trade at all. But as a guy with enough upside to potentially replace (and be an improvement on) the 30 yr old version of Varsho? Yeah, for sure. Varsho's one season with us where he was better than average at the plate was a smallish sample with a massive power surge way outside of his career norms, and his elite defence isn't elite anymore.
And if this is true, you can call it a fair piece to get for a 34 year old rental SP you had no leverage with.I'd argue that the bat is more advanced, but sure, that's the rough profile.
All I'm saying is that there is a path to a guy with this profile being an everyday quality player if they're plus with the glove at a premium defensive position. I saw the Chandler Simpson comp and that plays too imo, with Simpson not being a CF but Bateman not having 80 speed.
imo is all comes down to how his plate patience and CF glove translate. If they do, he can be an every day type guy imo.
