OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Vladdy is looking fat and slobby again and even his D at first has slipped. Really hope this somehow reverses next year. It’s like Matthews turning into a 5 goal guy instead of 50 or 60.

The Lukes comparison for Bateman is misleading IMO. His bat is closer to Nassim Nunez

Ehhh...why?

Bateman has been a plus stick through out his minor league career. 125 wRC+ this season in AAA at 24, 116 in AA at 23. Nunez put up an 80 wRC+ as a 24 yr old in AAA last year. Their impact at the plate in the minors wasn't remotely close. Bateman can actually hit.

The Lukes comparison isn't even that kind to Bateman. Lukes didn't put up a better AAA season than Bateman until he was 28. But similar enough profiles (Lukes a bit more pop, Bateman much higher BB rates).

Fangraphs scouting report on Bateman gives him a 55 hit tool, Nunez a 40. Their sticks aren't similar at all.

I think the Bateman ceiling is Kwan, but capable to good CF play

Bateman has a .393 BABIP this season so of course his numbers look inflated. His minor league ISO is still only about 0.060. Lukes had at least flashed power in the minors by that age, Bateman hasn’t at all, that’s why the comparison is wishful thinking IMO.

Very few hitters can survive in MLB with that kind of a bat, and they all need super-elite D to stick around.

Yeah, that's about right imo. 95-105 wRC+ in most years and plus but not elite CF defence is where I figure his reasonable upside to be. Maybe he turns out to be a pure AAAA hitter whose lack of power leads to his contact on BB% skills not playing, but I always have a hard time discounting someone who is putting up strong numbers at AA-AAA at the right age of their career.

But he has a .109 ISO this year, 26% LD rate, avg exit velo that would flirt with the top 100 in MLB if it was done there, etc. He's clearly hitting the ball harder this year. So yeah, all of that with 60-70 grade speed in AAA is going to naturally lead to inflated BABIP. No one expects him to be a 125 wRC+ in the show.

and fwiw by age 24, Lukes hadn't flashed significantly more power than Bateman has so far.

Steven Kwan? Jesus. Kwan was having a huge season in the majors at Bateman’s age after slugging .527 at AA and AAA at 23. No.

I have nothing to back this up but I think he is battling some minor injury. His batting swings don’t look as fluid as past years.

But he's never had babip this high at any stop before AAA this year. and a .393babip is wholly unsustainable. If you generously adjust him down to a still high .340-.350 babip he loses 100pts+ of OPS. And even his current 125wrc+ is just good, not great.

Myles Straw (without the elite CF D) is a better lazy comp for Bateman than Lukes. And Straw has had like a 99th percentile career outcome for a player with that profile.
