OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

It would not surprise me if AA is done for the time being.

The argument could be made we lost about 10-15 games cause of the pen last year. That has now been addressed with a fireballer closer, and elite allbeit 41 year old lefty specialist in Santos and Oliver

I do think we need a bat, and i bet AA does too. However i dont think there is anything out there except Fielder that represents a current upgrade on our 2 quagmire situations.

Thames/Snider in LF, and Lind at 1B

Ben Fransisco a lefty masher could provide a nice spark to mask the crappyness Lind and Snider represent vs LHP. The fact EE can aledgedly play LF, and 1B helps too.

As far as starting pitching goes.

I assume we are going into spring with something like this

Romero
Alvarez
Morrow
Cecil
McGowan/Drabek/Laffey

Ideally you'd rather have a more concrete idea of what you're going with, and i do think we are involved in Garza talks, however, i can see AA thinking that keeping our prospects and hoping for a big rebound out of Cecil and the number 5 slot is better than giving up a Gio"esque" package for Garza, or giving 5 years to Edwin Jackson.

There are always arms that hit the market mid year, so if we are in the mix and need an arm then, he can always do it then.

Same applies for a bat really.

As far as our pen goes, i think we're good.

CL-Santos
LHSU-Oliver
RHSU-Janssen
7-8 Litsch
7-8 Perez
Villanueva
Hoey
Drabek/McGowan/Laffey

As i say...i could see a Garza, if the price is right....but if its not...i think AA is prepared to go in as is.

The Chicago White Sox traded outfielder Carlos Quentin to the San Diego Padres on Saturday for two minor league pitchers.

The White Sox acquired right-handed pitcher Simon Castro, 23, and left-hander Pedro Hernandez, 22.

Quentin, a two-time All-Star, batted .257 with 107 home runs and 320 RBIs in four seasons with the White Sox. In 2011, he hit .254 with 31 doubles, 24 home runs and 77 RBIs in 118 games. A sprained AC joint in his right shoulder kept him out of 36 of the team's final 37 games, but Padres general manager Josh Byrnes says the outfielder is healthy.

Quentin is arbitration-eligible for the last time before becoming a free agent after the 2012 season. He is expected to receive between $6 million and $7 million. The date for exchanging salary arbitration figures is Jan. 18 and arbitration hearings begin Feb. 1 in Florida.

With Quentin leaving, Dayan Viciedo is set to take over in right field for the White Sox.

AA claiming a target date for success/playoffs seems so un-ninja like.

I don't recall anyone mentioning a specific date, but I do remember either Beeston or AA a couple of years ago saying they were not rebuilding, just retooling. That's one reason why some were upset that rather than building on the 2010 85 wins, they stuck with a wait and see how the young guys progress, before adding any impact players to boost them closer to the needed 90 win mark.

As we saw the 2011 team regressed in terms of wins, the pitching regressed, while some players like Bautista, Escobar and Arencebia showed some cosistantency.

I think the general feeling was the target year was going to be when the extra playoff spot was added.

Which came first, the "target year" or the date when they finally announced an extra playoff spot would be officially added ?

I just think a lot of people got excited at the 85 win season and wanted AA to go for it this coming year (aka fielder or bust) when AA has stuck to his plan (building for the future from within instead of blowing his wad on free agency) instead.

The Marlins have ''serious interest'' in acquiring Matt Garza, a league source tells FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

Per the report, the Marlins are looking to add another pitcher to complement Josh Johnson and Mark Buerhle. Rosenthal speculates that Class A outfielder Christian Yelich could be on the Cubs' radar, in addition to Matt Dominguez, Gaby Sanchez, Chris Coghlan and Jose Ceda. Garza, 28, is projected to make $10 million in salary this season, with one more year of arbitration left before he's eligible for free agency.

As far as any kind of target date goes, you have to make a rough guess based on a couple of the key moves AA has made. No, he never set a date nor did he ever admit to a "rebuild" but when it's hard not to call it a rebuild when his first task as GM was to trade the teams biggest superstar of the last decade.

When he traded Roy Halladay for Drabek and d'Arnaud, based on their ages you just have to think that you wouldn't be able to count on either guy for at least 2-3 years. When he traded Taylor for a more MLB ready bat in Brett Wallace, it kind of looked like this theory was out the window but then he flipped Wallace for Anthony Gose, who was 19 at the time of the trade and was a guy that AA wanted in the Halladay deal.

In his second off season, he again traded his opening day starter for a 21 yr old in Brett Lawrie. Another obvious sign that he might think the team's core is a couple years away. Around the same time he moved the teams highest paid player ever in Vernon Wells, a guy who with 4 yrs left on his deal was already basically worthless. Wells is another reason you don't go to the well on a pending free agent. He will end up making around $90M over his last 4 years of the 7 year deal and be worth pennies.

Anyways, if the team holds with what it had after the 85 win season there's no guarantee that they would have been able to land anyone in last years off season that could have propelled them into 92 win territory. Having Marcum in the rotation last year would have been outstanding. The team probably would have won 86 or 87 games but then it probably would have regressed this year and then suffered a huge blow when he signed elsewhere as a FA next year.

Damn near stood up and started a slow clap.......well said sir.

The commercial where the guy drops the purse and picks it up like a piece of dogshit gets me every time. I now carry a plastic bag in my coat pocket in the event that my wife ever asks me to hold her purse.

I dated a girl who was obsessed with purses and she wouldnt dare let me touch them. Thank god.

Blue Jays acquired RHP Jason Frasor from the White Sox for RHP Myles Jaye and RHP Daniel Webb.
Frasor was shipped by the Blue Jays to the White Sox at the trade deadline, but he'll now head back north of the border. The 34-year-old posted a 3.60 ERA and 8.6 K/9 rate over 64 appearances for the Jays and Sox this past season. He'll help set up for closer Sergio Santos. Neither Jaye nor Webb were ranked by Baseball America among the Blue Jays' top 10 prospects.
White Sox acquired RHP Myles Jaye and RHP Daniel Webb from the Blue Jays in exchange for RHP Jason Frasor.
Jaye was a 17th-round pick in 2010 that received a well-over slot $250,000 to sign. He's raw, but the 6-foot-3, 170-pounder has plenty of room for projection. The 20-year-old held a 3.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 49/18 K/BB ratio over 54 innings for the Blue Jays in rookie ball this past season.

Santos
Oliver
Frasor
Janssen
Villanueva
Carreno
Perez

welll...thats interesting...

I like it but always weird to see a team trade for a player they just traded not even a year ago

Frasor: Crazy day, but good news. Happy to be back. My family and I are thrilled to be going back to Toronto. #bluejays #jays

When Frasor got a message from Anthopoulos, he thought Alex just wanted to talk. "He's a talker."

Frasor heard from both Anthopoulos & #Bluejays PR before he heard from his agent or #whitesox about the trade.

Frasor: (When I was traded) felt like I was never coming back. Emotional day, 1st time I cried since I gave up 5 runs in Atlanta

Frasor: You guys are really going to like (Santos). I'll set him up any day. I can't believe Alex pulled him away from CHI

Frasor: This is great, I don't know how else to convey that. It's great. We're thrilled. I can't wait to put on those new uniforms.

This is an excellent pickup.

Frasor as the #3/4 reliever out the pen is flat out awesome. He's an excellent reliever on the road and he's a great situational righty too.

9th- Santos
8th- Janssen
7th/8th- Oliver, Frasor

Litsch, Villanueva, Perez will round it out. Many others capable too.

That's an excellent pen. Starting to look like Drabek will be minor league bound to start the year unless he blows them away.

Romero, Morrow and Alvarez will be locks in the rotation. Cecil, McGowan and Drabek will battle for the 4 and 5 spots.

AA was sad to have to part with Frasor to begin with. However, it was the cost of getting a young player like Rasmus.

It's great that AA was able to get him back.
