OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

The Sox and Jays lost more to injury than the other guys, but arguing that "Morrow/Bautista/santos = 85 win team" seems too generous to me.

Baltimore was the healthiest, but even they lost probably their best hitter and best starting pitcher for half the season.

they were a .500 team before the injuries.

can't expect to stay healthy all year, and .500 when pretty much perfectly healthy is not too impressive.

.500 at the time put them a 2-3 games out of a wildcard spot

and no, you can't expect to stay healthy, but few teams can sustain losing a top 3-5 hitter in all of baseball for half a season, plus their closer, plus their best starter (who at the tiem was pitching at an ace-level).

and that was with the utter shit they have gotten basically all season long from lind, escobar, johnson and romero.

and i'm not even accounting for the injuries that knocked arencibia and lawrie out of the lineup.

the jays were a decent team before 4 key regulars (and, notably the regulars who haven't had godawful seasons) went down.

and then the wheels came off.

but at the same time, they're a 70 win team. it isn't like they lost 100 games.

Janssen is a better pitcher than Santos.

C.Janssen: 276.1ip, 2.83era, 3.38fip, 3.55xfip
S.Santos: 120.0ip, 3.53era, 3.12fip, 3.28xfip

I refuse to say a bad word about Janssen though, dude is filthy.

Interesting how Dave Martinez is now touted as a guy that has trained under the best manager in baseball and values OBP.

Not too long ago John Farrell was the most sought after coach in the MLB because he was playing under Terry Francona and one of the best teams in the MLB.

Not to say he wouldn't be a fantastic coach, as he very well may be, but in my opinion we need to keep some sort of consistency with management. Every 2 years a new brigade of coaches is a disaster. Move players that dont conform or dont play up to par. Rasmus, Romero, Lind, Kelly Johnson, im looking towards these guys if we want to improve.

Question for you guys:

Would you make a move for Melky Cabrera? The guy will be 29 years old at the beginning of next season. If he gets passed his suspension from this season, he might add an interesting component to the offense. It would atleast be interesting to see the media circus that ensues.

Adds another dominican dynamic to the roster. Is it possible that our dominican-core all get busted for steroids? Edwin sure is an interesting case.

That pretty much sums up the Jays this year.

A rookie who has trained under the best manager in baseball for a number of years, and understands the value of OBP and the importance of matchups both in the batting lineup and in the bullpen.

I think AA is more responsible for our lack of team OBP. He's the one who creates the team makeup.

You know you have low expectations when....

This has been one of the worst seasons in franchise history.

Vizquel .337 --- .264 (-.071)

really, this year turning into a 90 loss season falls squarely on three players -- johnson, escobar and romero.

because not only did they all play well below their career numbers, but they were all total liabilities.

on the plus side, we haven't said much about it but hechavarria has hit the ball really, really, really well for the past month.

like plus bat at ss well.

factor in that D and he is making a strong case for a starting job next year, imo.

I think the season fell apart entirely based on the top-3 starters - they had potential to be good, and we needed to be good, but they were awful. Morrow was injured half the year, Alvarez took a big step back, and Romero completely imploded......and even worse even the guys who showed some potential to step in for them - i.e. Hutch and Happ - went down quickly to injury.

The offense ended up completely collapsing when Bautista, lawrie, JP, Johnson all got injured.....but I'm more dissappointed with the way they just completely gave up even when most of them came back. That's what really sealed the deal for me in terms of the coaching needed to be replaced - the complete lack of fight the young hitters showed after a bit of adversity was very dissappointing.

And that comes after IMO the coaching staff completely misused the 'pen in the first half, costing us a whole whack of wins when the team was actually healthy.

With our current roster i'd like to see this lineup next year:

CF -- Gose
3B -- Lawrie
RF -- Bautista
DH -- Encarnacion
1B -- Lind
C -- Arencibia
LF -- Rasmus
2B -- Gomes/Schimpf
SS -- Hechavarria

SP1 -- Morrow
SP2 -- Romero
SP3 -- Happ
SP4 -- Villanueva
SP5 -- Alvarez

unless we get some top free agents it's another year of rebuilding.
