OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Im not giving up premium assets for a Mitch Keller in order to move Eric Lauer into a Swiss Army knife in the playoffs and go with a 6 man rotation rest of season

There's a lot of back end bullpen options that have been talked about (Duran, Jax, Helsley, Bednar, etc..). There's a little extra safety since someone like Lauer is very likely to implode at any moment, or Scherzer gets hurt again, or whatever. But if it's using the same assets either way, yeah, better to get the true pen option and hope the rotation makes it through.

I get the fear of a pumpkining or injury, but you still need to roster whoever you get until said tragedy happens.

Two names i fully endorse are Mike Soroka and Steven Matz, both have had success as RP over the years and can fill the role of innings eater/long man but can also start if someone goes down. Matz in particular is probably a salary dump. Im not keen on a rental like Gallen, Kelly, Lugo or Morton ( who has been better for 2 months) and going to a 6 man rotation, and i really hate going for a mid tier guy whos controlled on a good contract like Keller. Just sign a guy like this in the winter and save the assets.

Degrom, E Cabrera, Cease and Alcantara ( if fixed) are legit upgrades to our staff, and i would go to a 6 man, or Lauer/Scherzer swing to accomodate these guys, but i think the cost is going to be crazy, and there are some really good RP out there that i would focus on

Top Tier

Jhoan Duran
Griffin Jax
Emmanuel Clase
Cade Smith

2nd tier

David Bednar
Victor Vodnik
Ryan Helsley
Seth Halvorsen

3rd

Greg Soto
Seranthony Dominguez
Jake Bird
Maybe Royals guys
Danny Columbe

I think you snag 2 of these guys, and i would aim for that first tier ( and dangle Yesavage)

For me adding a high-end reliever is #1. A guy like Griffin Jax would give us a potential late-inning mix of Hoffman-Jax-Yariel-Yesavage and maybe even Yimi too. They will add someone for sure.

I would also consider adding a SP. I think it's silly to talk about "demoting" Lauer, he's been awesome for us but is still a wild card, Scherzer and Bassitt are pretty old, and Gausman showing signs of aging as well. Bring in a guy and if everyone's healthy go with a 6-man for a few weeks. Not the end of the world with an older staff. In the playoffs if Gausman gets knocked out early you can bring in Max or Eric for 2-4 innings. Of course try to get the best SP you can, Joe Ryan would be great but there are some rumours out there that the Twins don't plan to move him. Sandy Alcantara has been so bad and inconsistent, sure if the price is low enough but in that scenario the Marlins may as well just keep him and trade him in the offseason or next deadline for a better return. Gallen inconsistent but I would still be interested, and Mitch Keller has been solid most of the year and pitching great right now. Great insurance in case of injury to bring in that extra guy. Soroka a great option too.

I actually question how badly we need to add a bat, I'm sure we will and if they do think Santander is out for the year, definitely could use a power bat. But every guy on the roster deserves to be here, except for Wagner and Uncle Leo, who are placeholding for Varsho and Gimenez. Straw has been useful all year and worth 0.8 WAR in a part time role and the guys love him, they can send down Loperfido if needed too - though I think one of these depth guys could get moved at the deadline. Still have Clase and Roden in the minors as well.

i mean he's fine but 0 homers, he's probably still going down when those 2 come back because Loperfido has also been really good since getting called up (.891 OPS) ... it is possible one of these guys gets moved at the deadline though.

I think i prefer Lopefido/Wagner in AAA as emergency options, with Lukes taking the role of LHH righty masher.

My problem is our RHH on the bench are Schneider who is streaky and Straw who is shit.

I want a RH upgrade like Laureano ( though reverse splits, and cheap option next year make him less interesting), Bader ( yes please), W Castro, or Refsnyder

Yankees added Ryan McMahon, who is not any good, but can catch a ball and make a throw.

Jays literally scared the Yankees from trading for a 3B with 50 HR power ( who can also catch and throw) and instead got the bloated contract of a guy who is meh all around.

Lukes, Loperfido, and Schneider are all really good. Wagner looks like he could be good too, but not enough to know yet.

I don't really care for Straw though.

Straw with the Bat is not great with a 91 wRC+ against LHP (let's not talk about RHP), but he provides Gold Glove Defence in the Outfield, and he is an excellent baserunner. Bader is a better player overall (2 fWAR and 114 wRC+), but not as good a baserunner and fielder.

I would still get Bader as an overall upgrade to Straw.

When healthy Lukes/Loperfido fill the same role.

Davis has looked the part, but can he be the only RHH bench bat on a playoff team? I don't think so
