OT: Vacations

My ex and I did banff. I have done it a few times.
If you love hiking, make sure you follow some of the off the beaten trails.
I lived on the shuswamp for a while and there are excellent trails there too.
Golden has the griz area and there is a wolf sanctuary around there too. You can go with the people when they run them.
Another nice area is northern sask. Just like northern ontario.
Speaking of northern Ontario, I just moved up to bruce mines and it is beautiful.
We tracked more bears and found cougar tracks last fall, also huge amount of other wildlife for photography.
Lots of kayaking too.
If you come up, drop by for a meal and a puff.

Cool. That's what I figured. I love cities and I don't mind "working" to figure out where to hang.

Not a lot of english spoken in Mexico City though, I usually suggest Puerto Vallarta as mexican training wheels. Safer and less scammy than Playa Del Carmen or Cancun, and most services can be accessed in some level of english.

But yeah, I'm the same, I want to explore new places and find out what I like, not what's been sanitized for white tourists.

Ive really only ever explored PV but it was one of the best times I had in Mexico. The locals were super friendly and helpful with my lack of spanish but appreciated the effort

PV is awesome, as close to heaven on earth as I've found personally. Just a really good mix of being a legit small city in the middle of tons of jungle if tours and hiking is your bag, on an awesome bay (I still don't think I've ever seen the water rough on Banderas). Nice enough areas/ammenities for when I'm feeling fancy, and enough areas that are unmistakably old school Mexican.

I met up with one local who ran Senor Frogs in Edmonton for 15 years. He has a restaurant in PV now. Chatted with him for hours, treated me to a crazy amount of food and drinks and wouldnt think about taking a dime.

What restaurant? I'll check it out.

I'm sure that PV, Playa, and Cancun are all sanitized a little for white tourists, but the cities themselves are at least a little closer to real life than the resorts.

I think I'll be taking a larger getaway to Mexico in the next year. I need to get out of Toronto and go work on a beach for a few months, and Mexico is definitely up there on the list with a good combo of weather/affordability/internet access. I think Playa might be set up a bit more for that lifestyle than PV, so I figure I'd probably end up there. But might depend on when I want to do that (want to get a couple months in SE Asia, and a few months in Europe too, but just gotta figure out the best time of year to hit up each).

So, anyone here been to Croatia or Romania? Any suggestions on things to see? I'm headed to Europe on Monday and those are two places I'm going.

Wow, as a big proponent of traveling, I haven't posted about it in a long time. That post was from October 2015.

Since October 2015, I've been to Belgium, Luxembourg, Romania, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Venice, Slovenia, Croatia, Japan, Africa (three week safari - South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe), Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Philippines, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Ireland and I drove from Nova Scotia to Alaska (with stops in Yellowknife and Whitehorse, among others) then south to Washington State and back to Nova Scotia.

In two months, I'll be going to South America (Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Brazil).

Anyone else have any vacation plans on the horizon?

Hoping Japan soon. Maybe in the fall.

I hate you.

That's an incredible amount of travel. Good on you Burg. It's awesome that you're able to pursue your passion.

Plattsburgh.

need a quick affordable resort getaway for my parents - any recommendations?

I went on a trip with my family to Club Med (Turks & Caicos) and was surprised how much I enjoyed it (I'm more of an adventure/explore vacationer than a resorter).

All inclusive, never need to leave the resort property. Unlimited food, booze, etc. But one of the keys for me was just how much there was to do, always beach volleyball games, scheduled floor hockey, you can go on the trapeze, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, etc. Tons of activities.

So it will depend on what your folks would want to get up to, but if its more than just sitting on the beach in the sun, I'd recommend a Club Med. Not sure how much it costs though. I don't think it is the cheapest option out there. There should be a couple different Club Meds to choose from too in the Caribbean, not sure the pros/cons of each.

yeah they've done plenty of hard travelling, i was hoping to get them a do-nothing relaxer in the sun. though having some points of interest would be nice when my dad gets the itch.

i'll take a look at that thx.

I'm biased because I'm sitting on my patio watching some poor **** beat his golf ball around the fairway of the 7th at the marina golf course in Vallarta right now...but Vallarta.

The city is safe, cheap, and accessible for gringos. The resorts in Nuevo Vallarta (about a 20 minute uber away from downtown Vallarta) are modern with great beaches (for the pacific side...they don't touch the caribbean side).

hmm. I think I stayed at a nice but old school resort there years ago - somewhere in between vallarta and sayulita.

what the hell was it called.

The only towns between Vallarta and Sayulita are nuevo, bucerias, and de la cruz. San Pancho is right next to Sayulita.

No idea about the resorts though.

palladium or something.

but I was hoping to find something a bit slicker. it was pretty old school.

Ton of new stuff in nuevo. Hard rock, fiesta America, krystal, velas, etc. Probbably a dozen or more new and modern resorts.

Nice. Was this all just pure travel, or you working from the road on any of these?

I've decided it's time to get out of TO. It's just not worth it anymore, so going to go work from the road.
