OT: Vacations

Time to bump this thread with many people likely going places once Covid is on the downswing. My Westjet voucher will be expiring soon so I think I'm going to book a cheeky winter vacation in Greece this year. I suppose we could do Hawaii as well, kinda wanted to go back there as well.

I had an air transat voucher from a cancelled flight last year, but opted for the refund option for it.

But yeah, once I get that second shot and the 2-3 week waiting period after, gonna have to think about getting back on the road. I expect a lot of places are still going to be fairly hesitant in letting tourists back and people will be hesitant to travel. But thinking it might be a good chance to get back to some places in like Italy or something that are usually packed and might be less so.

I’m not much of a traveller but my daughter is really hoping by next April or May to be able to reschedule her cancelled trip to Germany, Poland, Hungary and Austria.

She had been all booked and was about three weeks from take off when the world shut down. Fortunately, she got all her flights, hotel, and land transportation payments refunded. It took almost a year but without too much hassle she got all her money back.

odds that am I able to attend my friend's wedding in the UK in July? I have them at about 5%.

caveat being that any required isolation period on either leg of the trip would pretty much force me to cancel.

fortunately, back up plan is a trip to visit our good friends in Newfoundland! hopefully the Atlantic bubble is back by then...

As for me, my loose plans consist of: Roadie to visit DP out east this fall and/or MAYBE a trip to LA. Have an unvaccinated toddler with prior infection so I'm conflicted. Might wait on LA till early next year when he's vaxxed up. But I told myself I'm making no plans for 2022. I'm skeptical of normalcy until the world is normal.

Your friend should have waited till August. I think August till November is pretty much normal in the US, Canada, UK, and Europe. You were so close!

July IMO is going to be too early for things to truly re-open. I don't really expect Canada to ease the return quarantine until we have that 75% of people reach second dose levels, and even at that, will likely still have a number of restrictions around it.

Fall is realistically when things will start to get back, and even then it will be very tentative. 2022 though we should be nearing some good levels overall of vaccine around the world, so as long as there's not a new variant that eludes the vaccines, by then we should be back to a more normal. I have a friend who wants to get married in Vallarta next February. I expect they'll want the tourist season so it should be decent shape to travel by then, but I still expect things to be a bit dicey even still then.

This sounds like an amazing trip, hopefully she can do something along those lines again soon.

Yeah I think it'll be cutting it a bit too close there but who knows?

yeeaah looking like it will be just a little too soon. this is, believe it or not, their third date now since the start of the pandemic. my suspicion is they pushed it as far as they can without losing the deposit.

yeah I'm hoping for a fairly 'normal' summer in our Maritime bubble, with things being fairly under control by the time schools are ready to re-open. and honestly I feel as though this is a best case scenario...

but who knows, things can change rapidly. Scotians are loving their vaccines, which is fantastic.

the one encouraging thing is that the UK is ahead of is in their vaccine campaign, and there have been rumours of them dropping the inbound quarantine for people from select countries.

but as long as Canada still requires two weeks, that's basically a non-starter for me.

annnnd I doubt I have both doses by then either.

Gotta go pick up my dog in Mexico City and I'm way overdue to visit family in Vallarta as soon as it's cold enough here. Probably try to sneak in sunbelt travel to see the Leafs and another latin country for 10-14 days in February.

After that, all bets are off. We'll see how the world looks.

I’ve heard you speak really highly of Vallarta before, personally never been. How would you say it compares to say Cabo if you’ve been over there?

The second I get my 2nd shot and there is no required quarantine I am booking 2-3 weeks.
Still up for debate where I go with the gf.

Never been to Cabo, have heard a lot 2nd hand though. The gist is that Cabo is a bit more tourist geared, and Vallarta is a bit more geared towards ex pats, and mexican tourists (april to october it's loaded with local tourists, november to march is the gringo invasion).
