OT: Vacations

I was there for 4 weeks between the 2 countries. Starting in Buenos Aires then rented a 4runner and drove to the mountains for hiking. Then took a cargo ship down the west coast to Punta Arenas where we hiked some more before driving back to Buenos Aires. So really is was mostly about the hiking/nature. Spent about 5 days total in BA. The small places we visited in Chile were nothing special. Bariloche was also lovely. We we in there in the off season.

Off season being our summer? How long ago?
This was in November of 2010. So springtime in south south america. The weather was highly variable. From snow to sunny warmth. The mountains are famed for their changeability. BA was more stable and warm.

Anyone done a trip to the Alps? I've booked a flight to Paris, flying back from Venice the first two weeks of September. Planning on something like this (super rough, haven't booked anything but flights):

Day 1: Fly to Paris, take train to Lyon
Day 2: Lyon
Day 3: Lyon
Day 4: Take bus to Annecy, spend day there and overnight
Day 5: Take bus/train to Geneva, spend day there and overnight
Day 6: Train to Montreaux. Day trip to Glacier 3000. Spend rest of day there and overnight.
Day 7: Take Goldenpass Route to Lucerne. Spend day there and overnight
Day 8: Day trip to one of the mountains likely Grinderwald or Pilatus, overnight in Lucerne
Day 9: Train to Lake Como, spend day there and overnight.
Day 10: Spend another day in Como.
Day 11: Take train to Lake Bled, spend day and overnight
Day 12: Spend another day in Slovenia...not sure where
Day 13: Train to Venice, and overnight.
Day 14: Do a tour in Venice, catch flight to Paris and home.

It kinda feels like a lot. I'm doing this solo. I think I could cut out Geneva and not care and maybe just spend a day in Lyon.

Heading to Egypt for a few weeks of diving in the Red Sea. My wife wanted to go there more than me. Next winter we're going to Palau to dive for a few more weeks. I've always wanted to go there more than her, so we compromized. Retirement is grand.

My brother went on a Red Sea liveaboard from Egypt and really loved it. Got to see oceanics.

Palau is also world class. Both should be amazing. Jealous. Enjoy.

I want to do that as well. Say some of the French alps when I was in Southern France, but want to do the Swiss/Italy ones.

Heading to Japan (Hiroshima region) and Korea (Seoul/Pohang) soon. 4-5 days in each location so not a lot of time to squeeze personal time however if anyone has any recommendations I'm all ears

Never made it to Hiroshima in the spring. If you have time for a day trip to Osaka/Kyoto I can recommend stuff there.

Himeji Castle is probably a bit too far.

Atomic Bomb Dome seems obvious... I'm sad I missed it and will probably go back to see it some day.

Hiroshima style okonomiyaki is a must try. The peace museum is cool if you like seeing pro Japan bias in action. And also other cool stuff.

I fly in and out of Osaka so I will be able to do some site seeing in the area.

Hiroshima is the top priority on my list as well and I will be staying 15 mins from the city. No issue with grabbing a chain or a taxi to go for a day visit.

There is a sumo event in Nagoya that I am trying to get tickets too but it appears to be sold out. Im hoping once I land there one of the locals I am conducting business with may be able to help me find tickets easier

I've been to Lucerne, up Pilatus (via the narrow gauge railway) and Lake Como. Beautiful country.

For Osaka.

Check out the Glico man sign and that area at night. The lively busy area.

I liked Osaka Castle. The inside is basically a museum and gift shop but some cool views at the top.

TeamLabs there is pretty sweet as well. It's outdoor and only at night.

For food just venture a few blocks from the main streets and get some amazing stuff.

For Kyoto. Any of the famous temples (golden, silver, etc) but I liked the thousands of tori gates best.

The best stuff in Japan was when I got lost trying to find something else and would stumble upon a cool small temple or place to eat.
