OT: Vacations

But isn’t HNL 10 hours away?

Ya I probably should have said it's great for a jump off to Aus/NZ, and that's mainly how I've used it since my wife is from Aus and we now have young kids. 10 hours to HNL, nice two day or longer break, then another 9 or 11 on to NZ or Aus. I'll take that route over 5 + 16 via Vancouver every time. The AC flights to HNL can be pretty reasonable as well.

YYZ-HNL-Manilla looks like it might be a good way to do a SE Asia trip. But ya, Tokyo or something looks like it wouldn't really make sense via HNL at 10+9.5 vs 14 direct.

With the wife being from Aus (Perth no less, FML) I play with the routes on flightconnections.com a lot. It used to be fun but now with a 3 year old and another on the way it's just complete anxiety. What routes and stops give the best chance of survival.

it's mostly a NZ trip...just a couple days in Sydney at the end of the trip.
I lived in NZ for the better part of six months back in 2014 and I legit describe the country to people as a "magical fairyland". I still think that is the most accurate description. Just stunning natural beauty and a citizenry and culture that emphasize being outside and connected with nature.

Anyways, happy to share any intel I may have that you are interested in - feel free to DM me or ask any questions you have here.

I was based in Wellington (medium sized NZ city on the Southern tip of the North Island) but explored parts of both the North and South Islands. My explorations were heavily tilted towards natural beauty and phenomena but there will inevitably be way more to do than time to do it.

I spent a few weeks after visiting NZ trying to figure out how I could live there forever and drive a boat in some beach town or some shit for a living. Stupid beautiful, and far enough away from everywhere else that the crowds haven’t completely taken over (yet).

I just booked for my 25th anniversary, just the wife and I to Roatan islands Honduras for 9 nights on July 1-10.
We are apparently staying at the love is blind hotel.

It was very reasonable for that time. Flight isn't that bad either...here to Houston 3 hours or so. Then 2.5 to roatan.

Anyone else been

I have a few buddies from out west that loved the place and swore by it. They were big into scuba diving. Only downside they mentioned was watch the pick pocketing.

Went for a day on a cruise. Cruise port area was ghetto but the rest of it was good. We did some small island a mile or 2 off shore with a beach and stuff for the day.

Went for a couple of days back in the mid 90s. I had an enjoyable time. Met some good people, able to get in-person, air conditioned banking done, albeit steps away from shooing chickens out of the way - no worries. Had a hut literally steps away from putting my feet in the water. When she found where I was from, the proprietess asked me to say hello for her to a niece she had in Lancaster CA (!!!). I said, "Ok."

I kinda wouldn't mind shooing away chickens. I just love to be in nature and the water. Eat clean food and get some excercise and sun away from my phone.

Love the advice and stories people. Merci

Was there for a cruise. Did a zip lining excursion. Was good fun. Can’t remember much remarkable about the place otherwise but we didn’t go far.

Anyone ever gone to Lake Tahoe?
Never been, in spite of current relative ease of access, but baby sis recommends it highly. She's been vacationing there and in the area for over 20 yrs bc easy access from CA (winter sometimes challenging bc snow in the passes).

I, oth, can recommend a stay at GSR. Meruelo hasn't yet burned it to the ground.
