OT: Vacations

Did 36 hours (to Scotland) with delays and what not to get there with almost 2 year old. Was amazing going there. Lost his shit for an hour on the way back during a shorter flight (Toronto to Edmonton).
Probably heard that the Habs were starting Primeau.

Hell my last two jaunts were Asia. You want to talk long flights from Florida?

Yeah, I don't think I could pull that in a single flight. Wife and I want to go (Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia mostly) but I think we're going to do a few days in Hawaii on the way there and back to break up the flights when we eventually make the trip. 14-20 hours on a plan only sounds reasonable if I'm doing business class, and I'd rather just pay the same money to see and do more.

Looks like Beijing to Vancouver is only 11 hours. So depends if you want to spend any time on the west coast.

Or go to China....thats probably a flat no for me. I have a personal thing about avoiding authoritarianism with my travel dollars. Vietnam is on the wife's wish list, not mine.

Tokyo is about the same from Vancouver though, so yeah that would be a viable option.

I honestly had no problem with my 14 hr economy flight to Tokyo and I’m a guy who cannot sleep on a plane even when in first class where the seats recline all the way flat ….unless I take drugs.

So, take drugs

That YYZ-HNL direct flight Air Canada runs in the winter is money for an awesome recharge and jump off to other destinations across the pacific.

Can't sleep on flights and yeah, don't feel like drugging myself. Would rather just break up the flights and visit more places, take longer vacays.

Beautiful thing about travel is there's a bunch of ways to do it to suit how you fuck with it.

Checked my flight

10:55 from Vancouver to Osaka.

The return from Tokyo to Calgary was only 9.

Wife only wanted to do 10 days
Got her up to 16 because those flights are gonna suck.

Did China in 2018 for MIL. Her dad is buried there even though she is from Brunei. It was a blast and govt sponsored so dirt cheap. Also went to Cuba. Maybe Russia next....

future African Safari needs to be considered, IMO

Kyoto was more of a headache than anything for me. Not as connected as some of the other spots (still great but when compared to Osaka and Tokyo, it's a challenge), food is so-so unless you care for vegetarian options, and bus loads of tourists everywhere you go that never really made it feel like real Japan.

But everyone seems to love it, so ignore me.

And definitely plan for getting sick there. Long flight, shit happens. Last time I was feverish and constipated for most of my trip. I remember finding a laxative and posting here while taking the biggest shit of my life at like 3am japan time. It was like 6 or 7 days of backup.

But you just pop tylenols, hope it kills the fever temporarily and carry on being a superspreader. Can't say it really ruined my experience, with the exception of eating while constipated as fuck. Was tough to truly enjoy the great cuisine in the last few days of backup.

That's why I stayed in Osaka, but I did hit this famous tempura spot in Kyoto for lunch. Super expensive spot for dinner in their garden but lunch is a fraction of the cost because you're sitting at the counter watching this Japanese dude with OCD meticulously getting his oil at the perfect temp so that everything he serves you (fish, veggies, nuts) is delicately covered in the lightest tempura you'll ever eat.

There's usually a crazy lineup at lunch (no resos) but I unknowingly went during a typhoon warning, so nobody else was there except the cook and one server. The weather was fine....no rain, no wind, partly cloudy at worst... I only found out about the warning because one of the temples I hit after lunch had a handwritten sign said CLOSED FOR TYPHOON.

Then I realised why I had all of the sights (ie temples) mostly to myself. The next day, the city was jammed with tourist buses!

That reminds me of when I was in Kobe eating beef and hearing everyone's phone go off at once in the middle of the meal. Panic on everyone's face, we had no idea what was going on till we asked the waitress who spoke some English. Yeah, we were about to be hit by a major typhoon. Made the last train back to the hotel before the typhoon hit.

But in hindsight I probably should have hit up Kyoto that day instead, based on your experience.
