OT: World Politics

I wouldn't classify being anti Israeli government as leftist tbh. The biggest critics of Israel at this point are probably on the right. It's probably one of the few things the left and the right agree with each other about at this point.

Either way it’s clearly not genocide INO. They’ve said from the beginning the intent was to get back the hostages and they got back the hostages and the war is over. It’s not rocket science

But regardless, that doesn’t really make what happened to innocent Gazans any better. Whatever you want to call it, it’s not good. Like any war.

Ahhh my Twitter feed is basically entirely righties attacking Israel and Jews in general. It's a big movement that is picking up steam (using quantitative numbers on views that certain influencers get vs what they got 1-2 years ago), but I agree that this wasn't always the case.

but being anti Israel sure is.

You sure mate?

The protestors are the lefties generally. The very loud online hate fuelled, conspiracy driven presence that has quickly racked up new recruitments over the last 12 months? Heavily right wing. Classic case of both sides with the Israel stuff lately. They lost the PR war, which is why they pay maga influencers to push propaganda for them. But the base doesn't buy it. Israel lost a lot of support in the last year or two by the numbers. They never had much support from the left, so most of the increased hatred comes from the right.

To sum: The real definition of genocide makes me ask questions that are deeply uncomfortable so I'm just going to rage instead. Also, we only genocided because Hamas made us genocide, but we didn't actually genocide because Hamas actually blew up all of the stuff. We're not as bad as Hamas so that means we didn't do the genocide thing because I'm just making this up as a go along.

As for the whole "it's just structures!" bit. If you destroy everything that makes modern life possible in a place, you've made it uninhabitable for the natives. Even if you don't kill a single fucking one of them, that's genocide by the legal definition of the word that was created almost specifically to prosecute the Nazis for doing a worse genocide to your people. They didn't put the line at "death camps and wiping out the populace" for a fucking reason, and a good one.
At the end of the Third (and final) Punic War, the Romans had killed 3/4 of a million people and sold another 50K into slavery. They also made sure that the ruins of Carthage remained ruins.

So if you come across any Carthaginians in your travels, LOF, be sure to ask them what a genocide is.

Yeah, but for different reasons.

The right doesn't hate Israel, they hate Jews. But they also need to keep the Jews around for the Rapture. Also, they serve as a convenient scapegoat to blame when their fascist bullshit inevitably doesn't work. When you hear MAGA rage against "George Soros" what they're really saying is "The Jooooooos!"

The left doesn't hate Jews, they hate the fascist and genocidal Israeli government as led by Netanyahu. Get rid of him and a lot of anti-Israel sentiment goes away. Well, they'd also have to stop genociding Palestinians and settling on their land, of course, but putting Bibi into a prison cell would be a good start.

Both are kinda loaded questions though no?

- I haven't seen a lot of "celebrating" of Kirk's assassination. A lot of people pushing back on the silly moments of silence, the deifying of a debate me bro, etc though. Yeah, I don't think it's particularly "appropriate" to celebrate his death either, but I also kind of insist that the terms of discussion include who he actually was and not some post death heroic free speech warrior caricature that the right tried to turn him into until everyone forgot about with 48 hours after the funeral.

- aaaand setting aside the troubling bit that ~40% of Americans under 34 have more or less pro Hamas views, I'm not sure what we're supposed to gain from that question. I mean, I would answer "Israel" if forced into that particular binary but I don't think that shows us a lot about how people feel about basically everything else in the conflict outside of the narrow Israel v the terrorists who did Oct 7th bit.

Notes from another interesting part of the world. As a side note, first and last names here can be fascinating. One can be quite long. Combined can be a novel.

So this deal was on the table and available, all it took was for Israel to say yes, but…when multiple deals were presented by Trump with Israel saying yes, even after an extra year of eliminating their animal operatives, Hamas still took like a week to finally accept this last one? Sure doesn’t seem like a deal that was there to be had a year ago.

1. This particular polling company is known for asking weirdly leading A vs B with no other option questions that sure seem to lead to obvious answers like here. And has been a very trump friendly pollster in general.

2. 32% dem 28% ind 16% gop isn't close to "only lefties"

3. You're gonna have to realize that being "pro israel" or "anti hamas" for many Christians has nothing to do with being pro-jew.
