OT: World Politics

we'll see. a winter of discontent could drive europe to do some dumb things. and if OPEC is coordinating to keep gas prices up that'll hurt the US elections too.

EU leadership needs to be cautious here though. This is existential for a bunch of their member states. Western Europe could easily be faced with a choice to buckle and watch the EU dissolve or tighten their belt and show solidarity with their eastern members.

Yup.

And I’m somewhat pessimistic because Germany does what’s best for Germany.

German ruling class sees the EU as a vehicle to furthering German aims though. A bit of short term pain (uncoupling from Russian energy) for long term gain (being the economic and political centre of a potentially tri polar future world power structure) wouldn't be weird for them to sign up for.

There will be mewling and back dealing because of the decades worth of Russian money that has penetrated them, but in the end I can't see them risking the EU/Euro/Schengen zone over Russia.

I'm not convinced its a given that people in europe will be willing to personally suffer for Ukraine.

North America probably wouldn't.

sounds like the Ukies may have had some success on the Kharkiv axis. lots of twitter chatter about things happening in Balakliya, Kharkiv.

apparently there may be an announcement about it later tonight (Ukraine time).

Russian analysts will also have no stomache for trying to bake in the impact to energy exports this is going to have post sanctions as well. Once Europe bridges this short-medium term gap in supply, they're not going to be quick to go back to open Russian arms. Also, a lot of their pending energy regs for passenger vehicles will start to impact the EU energy import markets shortly after this is all wrapped up.

This whole escapade is causing a lot of governments to take a long hard look at their energy pictures and draw up plans to be more self sufficient in the future.

Just getting caught up on Ukraine after not looking at much over the weekend...

But yeah, this is apparently a thing. The Ukies appear to be playing 3D chess here.

According to the Telegram chatter, the International Legion is tip of the spear in Kharkiv and apparently the Russians are a mix of enraged by/scared shitless of the international legion. It's got a lot of ex special ops guys from all over apparently and a rep with the Russians for being nasty business to deal with.

Nice guy.

Bemoaning the fact that they didn’t toss all Ukrainians in captured areas, without exception, into concentration camps.

Also calling for Russia to attempt to roll back its battlefield setbacks by hitting major Ukrainian cities with tactical nukes.

The Russian telegram channels are full of that type.
