OT: World Politics

but yeah, Ukraine apparently has entered/is contesting Balakliya in Kharkiv which was a major Russian stronghold. they're approaching I want to say Kupyansk and if all goes well they could cut off/encircle Izyum.

long story short, if these gains are successful, this is a pretty big deal.

I think what we might learn in the next few weeks is that the demands from Putin to advance and gain territory were taken very literally and field commanders were throwing everything at the front lines and not preparing defence in layers to manage potential counter attacks beyond maybe a few nearby rear support positions.

oh I am sure Vlad wears the goat horns here.

just brilliant stuff by the Ukrainians. super impressive. super disciplined.

what it looks like they did was convince the Russians to send a ton of troops, including many of their best, to Kherson. then they demolished the bridges and other infrastructure to strand them there. then they engaged them and are just letting them attrit themselves to uselessness.

and while this is all going on and the Russians are moving troops to Kherson where they are most logistically stressed out of anywhere in the conflict, the Ukrainians find a weak spot near Kharkiv and could potentially regain a ton of land, encircle a big posse of Russian troops, and even further fuck up the logistics for the Russians.

looking forward to reading the history books when all is said and done. Zaluzhni may become an all-time legend.

So wait are you guys saying that russia is getting outsmarted even after Vladdy took over field command personally?

The Russians should have fallen back to the south bank of the dnipro weeks or months ago but the optics didn't align with the propaganda. Using that insane need for reality to align with their domestic political messaging against them is beautiful, chefs kiss type shit.

Because yeah...sending all of those assets into a bottlenecked area willingly is crazy.

I haven't read any summaries on the impact of Izyum falling to the Ukrainians, likely because nobody expected it to happen any time soon.

But from my expert amateur perspective, this would be a really big deal. And it may be back on the table. The other thing no one has really mentioned is that the Ukrainians have been whittling away at and gaining land back from the Russians for several weeks now on this axis. And the Russians have spent a lot of resources on failed attacks.

I am being optimistic because I am biased, but the optimist in me says we are nearing the TSN Turning Point...

Russian military doctrine places no value on the lives of soldiers. That much is very clear by now.

Its more humorous to put it this way, but it wouldn't have mattered. His generals would have ended up throwing the kitchen sink at kherson in an attempt to not make the propagandists look bad.

The real mistake is a foundational one. It's a political system that requires reality to align with the propaganda. Reality has a habit of not giving a fuck what people think about it

Irony is that's how the German's handled it when their invasion of the Soviet Union stalled way back in WWII. The corporal wouldn't let them do "tactical withdrawals".
