OT: World Politics

They not only want to win. They want to disembowel the Russian military for a generation.

Probably a good plan. Even in a best-case scenario where Ukraine comprehensively defeats Russia, recovers all its lost territories and Putin is hung from a lamppost or falls out a window, Russian imperialism still won’t die easy.

I would switch the word "want" with "need" but yes.

The end of this for Ukraine can't be to simply have Russia slink back over the border to lick their wounds for 4-5 years and try it all again. Eventually the firehose of military aid is going to slow (and they'll have to start paying for equipment) and they need at least a decade to rebuild, get into Nato, the EU and strengthen to the point that it's simply beyond Russian capabilities to even attempt something like this again.

Also, a small thing but still a thing.

Semi infamous russian military blogger/propagandist/douche bag War Gonzo appears to have had multiple caps busted in his ass while in a Russian trench that got stormed by Ukies yesterday. There is video of him getting clapped, but I won't subject y'all to that shit. It does appear to be him in the video.

Link please. I love watching Russian fascists experience their "find out" stage of life.

But what about their sovereignty?
GIVE US THE PILLOW REGULATIONS!

If they ever try to rejoin, I hope the other EU members drive a hard bargain. Not treaty of Versailles hard, but let them know that their foolishness did not go unnoticed.

UK is negotiating a free trade agreement with Canada now (since they Brexited the one they already had) and they’re finding out that they don’t have the same leverage as a sovereign middle power economy that they did as part of a much bigger, united market.

I said similar was going to happen when I was arguing with Altair years ago. It was obvious. They export very little other than being an english language financial centre in a part of the world that's attractive, and fish. "We're going to be the new Singapore" was always hilarious. Oh your economic plan is to become an offshore tax haven that only benefits the ultra wealthy? Yeah, that's going to fund the NHS. Good luck.

I’ve seen it mentioned, and I dunno how credible this is, that Morocco is a long-term candidate for the EU. It’s probably more politically reliable than Turkey (and Hungary for that matter) and is a non-trivial destination for Spanish and French investment.

Seems unlikely, there need to be significant changes to the legal code. But still. Imagine that.
