OT: World Politics

Russia: 119th in freedom, 63rd in GDP/capita, 2nd in nukes.

Some day Putin might be on the shortlist for failed leadership GOAT (OK, I know there are some good candidates)

But anyway, this is the guy many Republicans would vote for as president if they had the chance.

Russia's 99% a shithole. I never get why the population in these autocracies put up with it, especially when they have access to the outside world.

Part of the problem is that, except for extremely brief and incompetent quasi-Democratic/Liberal experiments under Alexander Karensky for a few months in 1917 and Boris Yeltsin in the 1990’s, iron-fisted one-man absolute autocratic rule is all Russia has ever known throughout its entire 700+ history.

Even after multiple revolutions in the past century or so, it’s so baked into their culture that they always turn back to it in some slightly mutated form in no time at all. Part of the reason why their neighbours are all so desperate to get out of Moscow’s orbit.

It's why a democratic Ukraine is so untenable for them. The Russian world has already watched other former soviet locales move to the Euro/Nato sphere and see drastic improvements in economy, quality of life, etc. Watching Ukraine do the same is a bridge too far. It would be like the Americans watching an independent California move towards the Mexican sphere of influence and have quality of life explode (okay, bad choice of words...)

Regarding Prigo:

This signals one of a few things imo because there's a 0.0% chance that Prigozhin didn't have some sort of contingency threat hanging over Vlad's head here. So either we're about to see a fairly significant response (either via Wagner, or kompromat release). Significant enough that Prigozhin thought it was enough of a deterrent from something like this happening, or Vlad was able to unwind the response before acting...or simply didn't fucking care and is willing to pay the cost to be rid of the guy.

Mob politics on a national level are better than most hollywood productions.
