This basically protects the Ukies northern flank from Russian counters and potential encirclement. The river is wide and deep enough that they would have to build a pontoon bridge to cross it. Those were the only two bridges on that section of the river.

wonder how long this incursion has been planned. seems like they've really covered their bases. good stuff.

I'm going to bet that it was something they pulled off of the shelf after the US aid package got through congress earlier this year and was probably one of the options Zaluzhny was choosing between when he went with the Zap offensive from last year that had limited success (and high costs)
