Mostly for domestic consumption, I suspect. Iran won’t get into a meaningful fight, the leadership will just string it along and keep a firm grip on their long suffering population.

Fuck'em. It's become pretty clear over the last few years that geopolitical information operations have become pretty endemic in western nations. If it's messaging that aids China, Russian, Iran, the Saudis, etc....it probably found it's source with them. Fuck'em.
